Pope approves barring gays being seminarians
Snip>
Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) has given his approval to a new Vatican policy document indicating that men with homosexual tendencies should not be ordained as Catholic priests.

The new document-- which was prepared by the Congregation for Catholic Education, in response to a request made by the late Pope John Paul II (bio - news) in 1994-- will be published soon. It will take the form of an "Instruction," signed by the prefect and secretary of the Congregation: Cardinal Zenon Grocholewski and Archbishop Michael Miller.

The text, which was approved by Pope Benedict at the end of August, says that homosexual men should not be admitted to seminaries even if they are celibate, because their condition suggests a serious personality disorder which detracts from their ability to serve as ministers.

Priests who have already been ordained, if they suffer from homosexual impulses, are strongly urged to renew their dedication to chastity, and a manner of life appropriate to the priesthood.

6. Gay men are not pedophiles.
The problem is not with gay men serving as priests -- the problem is with pedophiles serving as priests.

10. no - not really - the problems have been with pedophiles
who molest children not gay priests who may or may not be sleeping with adults in a consensual relationship. The church in its wisdom or lack of it has decided to they are one and the same which they are not.

Pedophiles who exist outside the church tend to be married, have steady jobs and look like everybody else. It's their outer ordinary looks and actions what allows them access to their prey. They don't look or act like a drag queen in the Greenwich village Parade or one of the village people or a biker from a leather bar. The church, panicking, has decided to toss the baby out and keep the bathwater. Not the first time.

12. I stand corrected
but then of course the church MUST come out against "gay" if they are to uphold the Bible, right?

Such a quandry.

14. In Catholic School....
I was always taught it was "okay" to be gay, so long as you didn't act on it. There was nothing "wrong" with being gay, but if you acted on your sexuality then it would be a "sin".

Therefore, gay priests were "okay" because they took a vow of chastity and therefore would never act on their "deficiencies".

This flies against everything I was taught as a Catholic.

Gods, but I'm glad I'm a Pagan.

17. I think
that may hold true in most "religions" ... to THINK sin is not the same as DOING sin....(sin being in the eye of the beholder obviously).

Strange though for the Bible does mention (with "normal" fornication anyway) that to look upon a woman with lust is the same as laying her (not exactly the wording of course hahaha)

15. actually, the bible doesn't seem to spend a lot of time addressing this
...and some of what is used by the fundies to rail against homosexuality turns out to be a questionable translation.

16. they already ban homosexual acts by priests
priests takes vows of chastity, whether they are gay or straight.

Gay sexual acts were always banned.

This bans priests who are attracted to men, even if they uphold the vow of chastity.

I understand the biblical injunctions to be against acts of "sodomy" (however that was meant) and not against a psychological inclination.

Again with all the problems facing the church and the world this is what they concentrate on? This and exorcisms? Are they mad in the Curia?

23. Well, let me tell you something...
Edited on Wed Sep-21-05 10:50 AM by CatBoreal
I'm female, and the rat bastard Catholic who raped me and sodomized me with an electric drill was a man.

The simple fact of the matter is, pedophiles are attracted to children; they become asexual to these monsters. Do you really think that if they had access to alter-girls, in the same way they had access to alter-boys they wouldn't abuse them as well? Puh-lease.... it's just another way the Catholic Church dodges any responsibility for the scandal.

"It's not our fault, it's the f*ggits...." Never mind that they enabled these priests all the while.

I'll trust a homosexual man with my kids before I would trust a Catholic priest.

You can love your church all you want, but the administrative end of it is as monstrous as they come.

Edited to add: I was FIVE at the time - just so you understand that I know what I'm talking about.

28. From what I know of Catholic clergy,
if they are going to root out all the homosexuals, they might as well save themselves the trouble and just close up shop today, 'cause there won't be anybody left to run the church and its educational institutions.
