118 Dogs, 6 Cats Fly Into LAX

LOS ANGELES -- Dozens of animals left homeless by Hurricane Katrina have arrived in Los Angeles.

Los Angeles and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will take them in and get them ready for adoption. The pets arrived at Los Angeles International Airport Monday night. An officer said he never worked a transport before like this one. A chartered 737 arrived at LAX with rescued pets, evacuees of the hurricane disaster.

The cargo hold carried some of the animals, but most flew in the cabin. Their kennels were seat-belted in.

After treatment they will be placed in local homes, but not necessarily permanently. Adoption will not be final until the end of the year so there is a chance to try to find the animal's true owner. The president of the SPCA L.A. said contributors cover the cost of the charter.

Between 3 and 4 p.m. Tuesday, another flight carrying animals from the hurricane-affected Gulf Coast is scheduled to arrive at Los Angeles International Airport, according to Much Love Animal Rescue. The flight will arrive at the Continental Airlines cargo area.

On edit: I posted this so I could get the punchline, but really, this story makes me so happy.

I'm so glad that these animals are going to get needed medical attention.

I just hope that they will be able to be reunited with their families. :-(
