School Removes Cups With Gay Author Quote

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/n/a/2005/09/20/national/a095820D47.DTL

A dining contractor has removed coffee cups with a gay author's quote from a Starbucks at Baylor University, saying it was inappropriate for the Baptist school.

Aramark, which oversees the coffee outlet, pulled the cups earlier this month from the campus store after consulting with Starbucks' district office and Baylor's dining service, school officials said Monday.

"I think they were trying to be sensitive," Baylor spokesman Larry Brumley said. "Obviously, Baylor is a Baptist-affiliated institution, and Baptists as a denomination have been pretty outspoken on the record about the denomination's views about the homosexual lifestyle."

The quote from novelist Armistead Maupin reads:

"My only regret about being gay is that I repressed it for so long. I surrendered my youth to the people I feared when I could have been out there loving someone. Don't make that mistake yourself. Life's too damn short."

1. That's too bad -- it's a wonderful quote.
And excellent advice for all young people: never surrender yourself to people you fear.

2. Good to see that Baylor's rewritten the Bible
1 John 4:18: "There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not reached perfection in love." NRSV

But to be fair, the First Epistle of John IS toward the back of the book, and most Baptists of my acquaintance got stuck in Leviticus and Deuteronomy while reading the Bible.

4. Well, such a sentiment IS inappropriate for a Baptist school,
as the staff and students in such places are not mentally, socially, and spiritually advanced enough to understand or be enlightened by it. It's essentially casting pearls before swine.

All religious and other private schools must be abolished.
