The ongoing catastrophe in Iraq is getting worse, but our "leaders" are too dumb or corrupt to get the hell out.

the 1900 one killed thousands of people and destroyed the city. It never really recovered its primary place in the Gulf. Things like that stick in the collective memory of a city.
I have to wonder about Houston - yes it's upstream but a) it's low lying as well and b) I have to assume a lot a building has gone up near the water - and who knows, texas being texas where they say an honest politician is one who stays bought - who knows if those buildings are up to code. Here's hoping they are.
