Texas is doing something smart!!!

They are allowing pets to go too.. I think that ONE thing will save lives and cost in rescuing people later :)

2. Last night I talked with someone just back from Mississippi...

he had gone to help rescue animals there. He said part of the problem in that part of the state is that dogs running around in packs without collars, vaccinations or being fixed is normal, so the people there see nothing wrong with them doing that now that all the people have left the area. In fact, the animal control was doing NOTHING until they finally decided to seize all the animals the rescuers had rounded up (which probably means they will be "euthanized" - which in some areas could mean shot in the head, drowned, or gassed to death.) Yeah, so far I am encouraged that Texas is being proactive about this.

How can they seize these animals? WTF? Don't they have enough to do already?

They cvan always tag anything as a "safety issue" and do whatever

...the people who had to leave (or chose to leave) pets my not be able to come back for them or may not be able to care for them where they are now..or might even be dead..

10. A few things...

First of all, they claim people might come back looking for them (true of course, they might...). Then they claim that they are trying to contain diseases. And then there's just that good old I'M IN CHARGE HERE attitude that means nothing else matters. From what I understand, it's a big problem because some areas can't rescue more animals until they are allowed to evacuate the ones they have! No more space or people to take care of them!

3. I'm impressed how we are responding

Granted, after Allison and Katrina, we should be well prepared...

But Houston and Galveston really seem to have their act together. Galveston's been evacuated. Houston has called for voluntary evacuation and the media is reporting which areas will be hardest hit. The mayor called for voluntary closure of businesses and many are following (I know of two businesses that I work with that are closing their doors tonight.) My boss gave me Friday off so I could be at home with my daughter (and not risk getting separated).

And yes, the "pets-are-people-too" philosophy is just great.

5. Each "vulnerable" city should have a special "with pets" evac center

because people with pets will always understand the noises, smells etc, and be willing to put up with it.. a few stinky days is certainly worth a lifetime without the trauma of abandoning your "best friend"...
