Dems must unite to oppose Roberts - here's why |
|
It is called Advise and Consent and it is the constitutional authority of the Congress in its review of the qualifications of all appointees, but especially judges for the Supreme Court. The simple fact is that the Senate Judiciary Committee has not received all of the requested documentation (some 100,00 pages) it wanted to see and furthermore, Roberts failed to answer relevant questions at his hearing. Plain and simple, they do not have the requisite information to properly review and evaluate his qualifications. As such he cannot and should not be confirmed. Any Dem with balls would say to Roberts and Bushco "put up or shut up". I think if the Dems would unite on this stance it could be sold to the American people. I think more than ever people are beginning to realize that the Administration is blowing a bunch of smoke up our asses and cannot be trusted.

2. Roberts has the votes to be confirmed |
|
I did call Feinstein and asked that she vote No. However, I don't think it matters how she votes.
60% of Americans think Roberts should be confirmed so, as a practical matter, it's hard to get people from conservative states to vote against their constituents' wishes.

3. Dems are once again failing to communicate |
|
They have a great argument and need to communicate it directly to the American people. But, once again they have not unity of purpose or message. Isn't it amazing how Repukes can hang together no matter what the issues or ideology, but the Dems crater and split ranks. This is an issue that Howard Dean needs to address and quickly or he will lose support for the Party. I know lots of people who are now calling themselves "independent", because they cannot stand the fact that the Dems still look like Republican Lite.

4. Actually I think more people are identifying themselves as |
|
Dems now than did a short time ago. (Wasn't this the gist of a thread on DU's greatest?)
I also think Dean has already addressed this issue.
I told the person who answered Feinstein's phone that I hoped Diane would vote against Roberts on the grounds that Bush had not released all of the documents about Roberts he should have. I thought that voting yes would just encourage Bush to flout the American public's right to know.
