Alberto Gonzalez is going to be nominated to replace O'Connor...
"Christian conservatives, long skeptical of Gonzales, greeted the pornography initiative with what the Family Research Council called ''a growing sense of confidence in our new attorney general."

This is the opening salvo. First he shores up support with the Christian Right and then we move on to the left with the "He's a minority argument" Here we go again...

9. I'm sorry if you thought it politically incorrect.
I was trying to think of every curse word I knew. That's all. No other intentions behind it. For the record, that term is ALWAYS an insult and derogatory. It is never used to respectfully refer to anyone. If I had used a term that were socially acceptable and called him that then I'd agree it was politically incorrect. I am sorry if I offended you.

5. You may very well be right
Do you think he'll try to slip in the nomination while the country's attention is on hurricane relief?

BTW, welcome to DU!

Are you going to the University of Illinois, perhaps? Thought you might be from your name.

13. unless the next nominee froths at the mouth....
voting for Roberts despite his written and spoken comments
about civil rights, his actions on the court, his work on
Bush v Gore, belief in Dominionism, ok with U.S. incarcerating
and not charging someone with a crime, not bothering to
answer questions or handing over papers actually owned by
the American people....lowers the bar for the next candidate.

Get a clue.

14. This Nomination Goes Nowhere This Year...
And this isn't any Democrat saying this...it's Arlen Specter.

This regime is listing and was lucky to sail Roberts through...but won't have as easy a time pushing through another right now...even if all the Democrats tied their hands behind their backs. This is a Repugnican fight that's only going to get better.

Yep...as noted, Al's no pal to the fundie right, but there's also other factions in the GOOP who will hold up this nomination to get their voices heard on a bunch of other issues.

Katrina/Rita promises to be the focus of a major House and Senate infighting as there's no consensus on how to pay for this thing. Offsets? Defecits? Tax Hikes? Also whose pork to keep, whose gets trashed? The knives will be long and deep and the wounds will bleed well into 2006 and beyond.

Lest we forget about the other looming storms over this regime and its enablers. The Plame case should boil back up this fall as indictments inside the Executive will be handed down and we'll see this White House...that's already known as a stone fort, turn into a nuclear fall-out shelter...constantly in reactive mode and more pre-occupied with their own troubles than with getting a pet on the SCOTUS.

By O'Connor agreeing to Specter's request to stay on the bench through this term...meaning June...this also puts that infamous "Gang Of 14" back in play. They can hold up the nomination procedurally and this looks like Specter saying that is a possibility no matter who is nominated.
