Texas DUers, a word from someone outside of Texas
The reason there are so many jokes about Texas is the self-importance the people of the state give us.

"Don't Mess With Texas."
"G-d Bless Texas."
"Texas is home of REAL Cowboys."

Texans (and I know alot of Texans) wrap themselves in the Lone Star flag and rip apart most states that touch it.

"Yeah, Oklahoma is good, but Texas is the greatest."

People, on the left, are frustrated with the mind-set of a state that allows political snake-oil salesmen to win election after election <Bush, Perry, DeLay, Gramm, Cornyn, etc> then wonder why Houston's air is the most polluted in the country, there are little worker's protections, few consumer protection laws and a near-police state.

I live in Arizona. . .it's the same, but we don't have the arrogant bravado of Texas.

With that said, G-d help all of you on the Texas Gulf Coast because Rita will make Katrina look small, in my opinion.

Meterology is a hobby of mine. . .I know the inter-workings of a hurricance and Rita looks like it will be worse because it will be over more warm water than Katrina was. G-d help you all.

2. You got it down in one ----and yeah, I'm a Texan
touchy touchy touchy people on some of these threads----NO SANE PERSON is advocating death and destruction. ANY SANE PERSON who has to listen to Perry, Bush, Cornyn, DeLay or some of our other exports as well as their "trained preachers" baying for the blood of "gays and feminists and....everything else" is going to say.."gee, if bad old N.O. was taken out by God himself, then what about Houston's postion at the moment?" ANY SANE PERSON who listens to that Jackass from Crawford bloviate about his own perfection is going to wish openly or secretly that "Rita" takes the roof off that fake ranch---the honest ones will say it, the more reticent will think it.

Magical thinking doesn't work: even the nut who wishes *you* dead from a storm can't make it happen any more than they can stop it.

We should get over ourselves---truly confident people don't give a damn what Oklahomans say!!! (or anyone else)

3. I remember when I first came to Texas
I used to see bumperstickers that said IF YOU AIN'T TEXAN YOU AIN'T SHIT. If I saw someone parking a vehicle sporting one of these I'd point out to them that it translated into IF YOU ARE TEXAN YOU ARE SHIT, lol.

I live in north Texas and I am thinking good thoughts for the coast folk.

4. I even have the 'don't mess with' as a tag line in my e-mails.
"Don't mess with Texas. It makes enough messes all on its own."

I guess I should put that in as a tag line on my posts here, huh?

Of course I've only been a Texan a little over a year, so my head maybe hasn't expanded to fill a ten-gallon hat yet.

And I don't even like cutting brush.

7. REAL Texans don't go around saying stupid shit like
"Don't Mess with Texas" or talking about where real cowboys live, etc. That's just dumb. Anyone talking mess like that just needs to chill out.

I have no need to thump my chest about where I'm from and neither has anyone in my family. I don't know where these chest thumpers came from, but they're idiots. Texas is just Texas. Yes, it's my home, I love it. But it's one state out of fifty.

12. "Don't mess with Texas" means don't litter.
I've always thought it was kind of clever, and that people who are offended by it miss its meaning. I dunno, maybe it is offensive, but if so, I don't get it.

9. i guess all the people who will lose everything they have
will be sufficiently cowered once the hurricane is all over. maybe then you can kick a little water in their faces once they are down. that'll keep them from being proud of their state.

then they won't have to be judged on the basis of a marketing campaign the texas dept of hiways came up with to keep people from littering.

what magnificent bullshit your post is.

13. Locking, with sadness
at the extreme insensitivity to our fellow members (and my family) preparing for this major storm.
