Agreed re: Allison Stewart

She first said this type of plane could dump fuel, and then immediately took correct information in her ear and put it out on the air.

Good to hear her talk to Capt. Al Haynes, too. Anyone ever see the History or Discovery Channel doc about the Sioux City flight? He and the crew manually pulled up the hydraulics. Shouldn't be humanly possible, but they did it. He said tonight he still doesn't know how.

7. And they were very aware that the passengers might be watching them.
And it turns out they were. Which I think probably guided their coverage, because immediately after it landed safely the NBC reporter enumerated all of the bad things that COULD have happened and my hair promptly stood up on end.

11. Not only that ...

She actually *let him talk*, even past a point where it was apparent someone was yaking in her ear to move on. He still had stuff to say. There was an awkward moment, and she went ahead and led him into speak some more.

A lot of interviewers don't understand the meaning of "interview." They use it as a chance to highlight themselves, never mind the person who is supposed to be the focus. I thought Allison did very well.

9. Yes, Larry was his usual idiot self asking the usual idiot questions.
How the hell this guy remains on the air is a mystery.

"What will the firefighters be doing?"

Uhhh...putting out fires?

At one point he noted that the footage of the plane we were watching was not the plane with the problem...however it was the footage with the wheel turned sideways we'd been wathcing all evening.

Paula Zahn didn't have many more rocket scientist Q's either.

5. They do it with everything though
Name the topic and they mangle it beyond belief...it's one reason why I can't stand watching TV anymore.

I'm always tempted to put my foot through it. :7

6. CNN: "As those people come off the plane, you have to wonder...
what they are thinking."

Ummm, no. I think that's about as bloody obvious as "Is that fire?"

14. MSNBC coverage was excellent (up until 10 pm ET)
When Scarborough came on and acted as idiotic as the empty heads on CNN. At one point I briefly switched over to CNN when Paula Zahn was still on and was just amazed as the difference. Clearly Allison actually went to J school at one point. Zahn, Scarborough, et al clearly never did.

16. Ex-Boeing Test Pilot Guides Us Through It
One of our local stations had an ex-Boeing test pilot who pretty much called it as it turned out. His view was that this was a "typical" emergency with a couple of similar incidents per year--just that they don't all get the coverage. The result (my opinion) is that pilots will have great footage of what goes on in this type of situation for training purposes.
But (my qs.) -- how the heck did it happen in the first place?
