Migrant evacuees arrested after U.S. aid advice

WASHINGTON - After heeding the Bush administration's call to seek help regardless of status, a handful of illegal immigrants who fled Hurricane Katrina have been ordered to appear for deportation hearings.

The Homeland Security Department encouraged all the storm's victims, including illegal immigrants, to seek help.

The agency stopped short of assuring that information about immigration status would not be shared with law enforcement agencies - a protection that was extended after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks - but Senate Democrats are pressing for such protection.

Mexican President Vicente Fox made a televised appeal urging Mexican nationals affected by the storm to seek help.

He said U.S. authorities assured his government that "those who were not documented at the time will not be subject to any pressure or persecution whatsoever."

Despite these promises, at least two instances of illegal immigrants being detained have occurred.

bush* has acted as though he were sympathetic to migrant workers when all he is really interested in is union-busting. Now that these workers no longer have a job and would need assistance like everyone else who has been affected by Katrina, he has them all arrested. :grr:
