"We need to build more refineries on the Gulf" |
|
Remember all the repukes saying this would solve our energy problems? It was just a few weeks ago. What are they going to say now if many of the existing ones are totally destroyed or put out of action for months thanks to Katrina and Rita? What are they going to say if something even bigger, say the biggest Cat-5 on record, hits the Gulf and turns it into one massive toxic waste dump?

2. well where would you like to build them |
|
we in the gulf region want the jobs, other parts of the nation don't want the jobs, it is less than ideal that so many refineries are concentrated in one region but the rest of the country is unwilling to do the necessary work
if you have a better place for a refinery, step up to the plate, we'd all like to know abt it

5. For national security reasons, every state or region should have its own. |
|
So that a disaster one place doesn't destroy the national economy. That's just...logic.

3. the oil companies have been closing refineries to drive up prices |
|
they blame environmental regs, but they really are doing it to create shortages.
of course, a hurricane in the gulf just magnifies the shortage.

4. Building more in that area is a bad idea. |
|
They would just get shut down and damaged by more storms.
I don't know why they don't put them in North Dakota. There's no chance of a hurricane ever hitting that state, so it would make sense.

that they might as well stay there. Why pollute new areas?

want to build a huge refinery in Cushing, Okla. It doesn't entirely limit the threat of a hurricane because the crude will still come in through the gulf, but for transport post-refining it would be good. There are major pipelines running through Cushing already.
