Once again, U.S. Northern Command in Colorado Springs is involved in coordinating emergency response to the hurricane zone. It played an important role in the aftermath of Katrina, and it looks as though Rita will pose some of the same problems.
In addition to their Homeland Defense duties, U.S. Northern command at Peterson Air Force Base, orchestrates the military response to natural disasters at the request of FEMA. A big job before, during, and after Katrina. But add another hurricane and things get tougher.
The headquarters for NORTHCOM and NORAD is staffed 24 hours a day. From there military members and civilians can monitor situations, and they can put a large number of federal resources in motion to help out. While they are still dealing with the aftermath of Katrina, and efforts there, now they are looking at Rita. All the while keeping an eye on terrorist threats. It sounds like a lot, but when NORTHCOM was formed after 9-11 it was designed to handle multiple disasters at once. Major General Richard Rowe said, "A significant part of my day has been spend looking in different directions. Our other responsibilities here in defense and support to other civilian authorities."
