Evidently they don't think they can get them transported, they seem to be in the need of two generators but I don't know how successful they wwill be in that pursuit. I emailed the HSUS Disaster Center for help but no response. I will call them tomorrow to make sure they are well aware of at least the existence of Whiskerville.

I am heartened by the fact that the caretakers of the shelter are going to be stay there with the cats. This obviously increases their chances significantly.

My wife and I are letting a candle burn tonight (safe distance from our cats) with all the humans and animals left in this dreadful storm's path in our thoughts and dreams, but in particular to Whiskerville and Whiskerville's brave and honorable human caregivers ( and to that poor homeless sixty-something year old guy I read about drinking himself silly still walking the streets of Houston I read about and no doubt thousands other people like him.)

To all those who suffer and to those who weep with those who suffer,
good night.

1. Cats will be fine. More important that people are safe. Cats know what
to do in a hurricane much quicker than people.

4. Cats will sense the pressure changes and demand to be in an area
as far away from window & movement as possible. Once they are behind shut windows - they'll be fine. They seriously have about an hour warning. Mine screamed to be let into the closet - opened the door himself - demanded I follow suit and didn't calm down until I closed that last window (which was open a bit to see the storm coming). Then he was fine. Only 4 years old and had never seen or heard a hurricane before. But once the house was all closed up - we waited patiently for the storm to arrive. He was curious. Storm came 1/2 and hour later. He was okay - as long as he wasn't exposed to the outside in any way.

The big worry is a direct hit. And then - god help anything.

If it is not a direct hit - the cats will find the safest place themselves an hour beforehand. All outdoor cats will do the same.

Cats are dying in Louisiana and Mississippi from the ravages of Katrina.

Go to http://www.alleycat.org and tell me that "cats will be fine" on their own.

Better yet, click the link in my .sig and donate.

a direct hit.

9. Cats don't hunker
In much the same way as Charlie don't surf.

10. 4 feet good, 2 feet bad
My heart absolutely breaks when I see any animal in distress, but when they're in a position, caged or confined in a house, where they CAN'T get out, I just don't know. My husband and I have saved so many animals from human mistreatment, I just cry when I see all these animals lost and confused. Humans should have (and I emphasize
SHOULD) enough sense to get out, but our 4 legged friends are at our mercy. We have send food, money, cages, leashes and whatever we can think of that will help these poor creatures. Of course, people are the first to think about, but please, please don't forget about all these creatures that are in that position because of their 4 legged owners.
