Byrd is not a liberal. He is a conservative on social issues who had said he would vote for Roberts a couple of months ago in a statement where he blasted liberal judges.
That he voted against IWR and is very strong on constitutional issues does not change that fact. Dont forget he is part of the dirty 14.
