Bush saddened by killer bus blaze 18 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush was saddened to hear reports that a bus carrying elderly evacuees fleeing Hurricane Rita exploded into flames, killing at least 20 people, the White House said.

"He was briefed on that this morning in his hurricane briefing. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims. We were all saddened to learn of the news," spokesman Scott McClellan told reporters.

Local television reported earlier that the bus, carrying passengers from a Houston, Texas, nursing home, burst into flames near Dallas.

Reporter Erin Allen of NBC television affiliate KXAS in Houston said she spoke to a Houston nurse who was one of first responders at scene and managed to help driver pull several people from the bus before three explosions rocked the bus as the oxygen tanks of several passengers caught on fire.

3. He's trying to show that he really, really is paying attention
this time. I wonder if he's also saddened by the traffic jams out of Houston. Hope he doesn't get so saddened that he feels the need to grab for the bottle. - K

just to show his chasing after details.

15. He is saddened because this
indirectly hurts his ratings.

He's sad because the public realizes he is completely inept at his job. He doesn't qualify for sorting clothes at a Goodwill Donation center (sorry, GW workers, you're awesome).

He feels bad because all this negative news makes his poll numbers sink like the Titanic, which ultimately spells bad news for Halliburton, KB&R, and others.

NOW we're talking upset.

4. How Awful

And the horrible irony is, Rita is weakening and turning north, so a lot of these Houston evacuations may prove unneeded. That is not a judgement on the evacuation order, because better safe than sorry. Tragically in this case, these people may have been safer riding it out.

Well-constructed buildings should hold up to a category 3 with no or minimal structural damage.
