Bush: Afghanistan Proof of Progress in War on Terror

Blackanthem.com, WASHINGTON, D.C., September 23, 2005

The successful Sept. 18 elections in Afghanistan signify a vital step toward democracy in that country, and the situation there is an example of the progress being made in the war on terror, President Bush said at the Pentagon today.

Afghanistan is still a work in progress, and nearly 18,000 U. S. troops are still there serving as part of the coalition, the president said. There are still terrorists who want to overthrow the new Afghan government, and the U. S. and the international community are dedicated to thwarting their attempts, he said.

"Our country will stand with the Afghan people as they secure their freedom and become an ally in the war on terror," he said.

...

The world is better and safer because democracy has been brought to Afghanistan and is being brought to Iraq, Bush said, but there is still much work to be done on both fronts.

1. Doesn't the Taliban still rule Kabul?
Not to mention if Chimpy ever bothered to read anything other My Pet Goat he'd know that Afghanistan is EXTREMELY complicated with the number of different ethnic groups and tribes all vying for power, it is a very very unlucky nation that will probably never see true peace in our time much less if you think peace through force will be possible there.....Just think the Russians couldn't "stabilize" Afghanistan even with nearly a decade's of work. Oh sure we were funneling weapons and money to the Pakistani ISI to be distrubited to the Mujahadeen, but that doesn't make up for the fact that Afghanistan is a nation of war, war is their hobby, to them killing somebody takes as much gut out of them as it does for you or me to swat a fly, and a nation with that sort of mentality cannot be made to grovel for ANY army much less an invading one.
