Freeper hits protester at Metro Center
Jerry (tokenlib?), Adriene (don't know screen name) and I headed back to the mall after RFDs to catch some music and when we were tranferring at metro center there was a bit of fighting. The freeper was yelling at they guy and puched him. I saw his lip was bloody as they walked away at which point the guy called him and his friends "pussy faggots" after saying something about the "commie train." I guess the train the freeper was pulled onto by his friend (to cheers and applause) was the "freedom train." After we got on our train some other people going where we were going said the freeper just walked up to the guy and grabbed his sign and started givng him crap. He looked young and pretty able bodied, so why isn't he in Iraq? I guess you have to beat people up when they disagree with you if you have no logical arguement to counter them.

1. We should form defense guards for this kind of thing
when protestors are attacked by little pissants like that guy, then they will be eliminated by the defense guards.

4. Do NOT dis the DC cops
Most of them are with us. They have family, friends, and coworkers in Iraq. They are not the enemy. They want us to succeed.

An asshole is an asshole. Don't blame the cops, District, Cap, or Metro, for the actions of a complete and total asshole. Those fine servants in blue do NOT support this monkey's war. They want their coworkers, their family, their friends HOME.

They have taken a huge hit with reserve callups.

6. I respect the police and I respect the good people of police departments
But corruption exists everywhere. It isn't the war on iraq that dragged them away, but the fact that a police officer or security guard who'd want to help just wasn't on shift at the time. I agree -- we shouldn't blame a district's department for things. But we shouldn't give the impression a district is perfect because of the district, either. Not even the NYPD or the NOPD.

9. The DC cops are largely African American
Their boss is a Chicago born African American, and they hate this bullshit. I know many of them. They think it is all BULLSHIT, but hey, they have mouths to feed, so they keep their counsel.

For every corrupt individual, there are a hundred good souls in that outfit. They just want their coworkers (many IRR who are called up) to get home in one piece. ASAP...

Of course, they also want them to come home so they can do special details again in greater frequency (work as a cop for huge pay, for private events) which they cannot do when they have to work extended shifts because Chimpy has taken their coworkers off to Iraq!!!).

I will be the first to say that DC is not perfect, but since Ramsey came aboard as top dog, it is a thousand percent better than before. He has kicked some serious ass, and taken names, to boot.

7. I'm not dissing them. I'm just saying this guy should have been arrested
for assaulting someone as an unprovoked attack!

This is battery.

12. The offended party needs to press charges ASAP
With all the cameras in Metro, they can ID him easily. The equipment they have is really state of the art.

8. His friend got him on a train before they could have arrived
A couple metro officials came down but didn't do much. I don't know if they can, meaning if they have the legal authority to detain people instead of letting his friend drag him off. During the yelling a bystander was yelling "Police! 911!" which brought the officials down to the platform, but unless there happened to be cops standing outside the station the guys were gone before they could have arrived.

10. On the 'bright' side (?)
The metro is covered six ways to Sunday with video...continuous coverage, face scans, the whole nine yards. Ride metro and you are face scanned. And they keep the images for more than a day, for sure.

If they decided they needed to get this guy, he is GOT.

Someone needs to press charges, and this will not go away. You do NOT fuck around on METRO, they can get you if they so choose.

11. I assume you reported this incident. Therefore, the officers...
...whom took your report should have given you a contact report/file/incident (etc.,etc.) #. EVERY law enforcement agency in the country follows such a procedure, to some extent or another. Given that this was Metro D.C., I know it's the case.

My challenge to you: post that contact report/file/incident # here, and I guarantee you thousands of DU'ers will be e-mailing and calling on a regular basis to urge the D.C. police to follow up on it, and they will be motivated to devote the resources to see that this matter comes to a just resolution.

Thanks in advance for doing the right thing.

18. No none of us reported it
Hopefully the guy who got hit did, and I don't know if the metro officials did since they guy's friend just pulled him onto the first train that came to the platform.

13. I was thinking about this kind of thing today, for some reason
I came to the conclusion that the odds of any given DUer losing a fight (unarmed combat -- firearms are another story) to a Freeper type are lower than you'd expect from a group falsely characterized as consisting of nothing but 'bleeding-heart' wimps and pacifists. I say this not because of the innate belief that we're better human beings than they are -- this is a given -- or that our club's better than theirs, but because of one very good reason.

Well, maybe more than one very good reason. An ancillary good reason is that many of us have been through military or law-enforcement training that included self-defense and unarmed combat (or have trained in various martial arts for long enough for them to be actually useful)...the very nature of the Freeper, seemingly most often a chickenhawk with few powers of critical thinking, suggests to me that, for all their swagger and alleged facility and expertise with firearms, fewer have been through either military or police training than they'd like you to think. Chickenhawks don't like to put themselves in harm's way -- there're poor people and black and brown people to do that for them.

The main reason that occurred to me, though, is that Freepers and their ilk are essentially bullies. Not just bullies in the classic, schoolyard sense, but bullies in a broader sense -- just like the neocons and their corporate fascist cronies are bullies, in a way, when they declare economic and social war on the disadvantaged or the soon-to-be-disadvantaged so as to further their own greedy agenda. The irony here, of course, is that the Freepers are likely to be among the victims of the neocon agenda, but that's another story.

Anyway, it's been my experience -- and I doubt anyone would dispute this -- that bullies are invariably cowards. And one thing I know about cowardly bullies is that once their bluff is hurt and their defenses bypassed, they're hurt and they're running scared. Few things are more pathetic than a vanquished bully. You can almost feel sorry for them. Almost.

On the other hand, I've seen and heard of some pretty meek and timid people, not blessed with tremendous physiques nor training in the art of putting a hurtin' on another human's body, rise to the occasion in self-defense and sometimes inflict some quite stunning injuries. The martial arts teachers that I've had, too, have by their own example proven to me the danger in assuming harmlessness from a seemingly harmless exterior -- that short, or rather overwight-looking, or kinda goofy looking dude might just be a martial arts expert (or a special forces veteran) of many years standing. Not all martial-arts experts look like the dudes in the kung-fu films or Jean Fraud Van Dumme, and not all special forces vets look like Rambo (of the few that I know, that actually were special-ops people, exactly none of them fit the movie stereotypes). Sometimes there's a whole lotta potential to inflict pain lurking within the least likely people, judgign the book by its cover, but the only ones who'll ever kinow that are the ones who unleash it through their own aggression. But you can bet that that belligerent loudmouth who's obnoxiously threatening all sorts of harm is probably, no matter how big his biceps (bigger muscles means bigger targets...not that your average Freeper is likely to be mistaken for the likes of Dolph Lundgren), about as much a real danger, when things really get going, as the average wet tissue paper.

Things are not always thus, but very often are. I'd just love to one day see a willowy blonde 'hippie-girl,' who's been training in tai chi since she was a teenager, throw some redfaced 'patriot' a good dozen feet down the sidewalk...you can bet he'd land heavy, too.

16. After moving to a new city...and being bullied for months after the
migration...I finally stepped up in the lunchroom and popped one of said bullies square in the teeth.

I am a non-violent person. I can count how many fights I've been in on one hand. But I snapped. Struck him. And they all left me alone. The whole motley crew that had tortured me for six months.

I hate to say that this is what the bully crowd responds to, but a figurative "POW...right in the kisser" can shut them up just enough to listen.

Although...in this case...I think the literal haymaker would've gotten the point across more accurately. But I work in rough industry, with many a union (and Dem) friends. And I've never seen anybody swing on those guys....and walk away a happy man.

19. I was in Crawford
and saw that these freepers are violent and crazy. There were a few who reached out and tried to talk or who stayed there on the opposite side of the road and were peaceful. But there were also some who were violent or more likely - threatening. They drove through the camp fast, plowed dwon the roadside memorial, etc.

And Cindy's supporters are to be commended for not reacting violently.

I guess I'm really angry at these morons.
