"so me and 500,000 of my closest friends went to D.C. ..."
Edited on Sun Sep-25-05 11:00 AM by DancingBear
I live in Virginia, and conventional wisdom is that if you want to go to D.C., you go on Friday, because everyone else is leaving. With most of the populace heading west or south, eastbound traffic in is a picnic. So when we got 10 miles outside of D.C. on I-66 East and traffic STOPPED we knew Georgie and the boys were in for some serious company. Get out the rollaway, Pickles – we’re staying the night.

We came from everywhere. The Metro lines were jammed tight, and there wasn’t a hotel room to be seen for miles. We owned the Red Roof Inn – 30 blocks away from the Washington Monument – and we smiled at each other in the hallways, and in the elevators, and at breakfast. Those of us who had been through Vietnam knew what we were looking at here –we were building another movement to stop another war, and we were seeing the same things we saw then. I had been to D.C. in 2004, and came back concerned about the lack of young people protesting this immoral invasion. Fast forward to yesterday – my oh my, what a difference a year makes. The young are waking up – scratch that, they HAVE woken up - and they are ready to take stewardship of this movement and lead it forward. If we failed to tell you yesterday, we are thankful.

“Tell me what democracy looks like – THIS is what democracy looks like” – that chant still gives me chills. Imagine hearing it block after block after block, from soldiers and grandmothers, and from students and teachers. Those who were here for the first time marched side-by-side with those of us that had been here before, and we listened to their stories as to how Our Great Divider had gotten them off their couches and into the streets. Downtown was so full that some marchers had to march on sidewalks, as the streets were not wide enough to hold them. As the march moved its way through the Capital, it picked up strength from the thousands upon thousands who lined the access roads and street corners, leading us in cheers, and in support.

And when it got in front of The White House it roared. I mean, it roared. It thrust its collective middle finger at The Crawford Pig, it screamed at the Secret Service standing on The White House roof, and it told the world that we would make come true the words. Not. In. Our. House.

I think of the things I saw. Of the young girl, dressed as The Statue Of Liberty, and holding a toy machine gun. Of the priest on 15th Avenue, holding a small sign that read, “There is no excuse for torture” as he watched with a look in his eyes that told me he believed we could win. Of the elderly woman who, upon reading the sign I was holding, broke down and was comforted by her elderly companion. Of Dick and George and Colin and Condi and Osama and Saddam, walking the route in orange prison jump suits and handcuffs. Of eight-year old Adam from Maine, who carried his penny jar with him and told us that “President Bush is using lots of these for the war.”

At first, I thought it was just me and 500,000 close friends that day, but I was wrong. It was thousands upon thousands of people throughout this country, holding marches and rallies in towns and cities all over America. It was the folks in New York City, who, after finding out their Amtrak train had "mechanical problems” and could not get them to D.C., held a spontaneous rally in Penn Station. It was parents at soccer games who finally realize the lie for what it truly is, and the man with the “Nebraska football” hat in Taco Bell who turned to his wife and sadly said “we’ll be in Iraq for years.”

And it is us. It is the people I had the pleasure of meeting and exchanging names with, and those who I knew were part of the community but who I did not get to speak with. Many of you came much farther than I, with hardships much greater. I commend you all, and as always I thank you for letting me play my small part.

The Hurricane President is gasping for breath, because yesterday a half a million people stood on his throat and stripped him naked in front of the world. He may think he can out run us, but he is sadly mistaken. We are faster than we have ever been, and we know where he hides. We will catch him, and we will stand again.

I don’t know about you, but the next time I’m bringin’ boots.

13. Actually, I'm not as tired as I thought I would be
My usual back pain isn't bad, my knees aren't as bad as I thought. And my spirits are definately bolstered by all the positive energy that was there yesterday. I am a bit dehydrated still, (I should have brought some water) but it's ok.

28. I saw a sign with a DU sticker on it about 20 ft. in front of me, and I
wanted to catch up and say hi, but I was trying to hang onto my 10 yr. old in that huge crowd. Shoulder to shoulder and I was afraid that if he got away from me he would be lost for quite a while. Sardines came to mind!

16. Perfect, absolutely perfect description of yesterday
I cannot tell you how your post made me feel. It brought back all the feelings I had when the bus I took from BWI was so filled with protestors that there weren't any places left to stand. Then the chills I got when I entered the Greenbelt station and saw lines and lines of protestors trying to get farecards. Then how my heart was filled with pride as the conductor told passengers at other stations that they would have to wait for the next train because our train was filled to capacity. Then when I got into DC and saw a sea of people and these people were filled with diversity, it just gave me so much joy. I just loved it!

I suspect those photos don't do it justice.

The MSM is at it, though. Just what many here suspected it would do.

NYTs - a small picture, then an error about which page has the itty bitty story.
The Chi Trib - extremely small print, and a story on page 20. one small B&W photo, and a minor story. They quote one police guy who "thinks" they probably hit 100,000.
My local regional paper - nada. Could not find a story.

yesterday. It was a pleasure to be in the company of such a massive horde of human beings, all like thinking. It gave me a glimmer of hope for our cause. We'll see how long it lasts. Thanks to EVERYONE who turned out, especially to those brave souls who bused 17 hours or so just to march then got right back on the bus for a 17 hour return trip. THANK YOU!

31. Something different about THIS rally
I've been to every big anti-war rally in Washington for the past 25 years and there was a different feeling to this one. DancingBear does a good job capturing a little bit of the magic.

I drove to the Shady Grove metro station and saw more than a dozen charter buses in the parking lot -- a first in my experience. Some were from as far away as Illinois. With each stop the cars filled with the buzzing of people from all walks of life anxious to express themselves. I have never seen so many individual hand-made signs at any rally I've ever attended.

The crowd tired of the rambling speeches and took to the streets on their own accord. It produced a logjam that pent up and focused the crowd's emotions. People in the streets conversed, chanted, played music sang slogans. Amidst this huge display of diversity was a unity of purpose. It gave each one of us a feeling of strength.

We felt WE represented the consensus of the broad mainstream of America. We bunched up in front of the White House amid rolling waves of sound. We gave voice to our displeasure aimed directly at the citadel of power, not just for us but for the millions of other Americans who could not be there. The roar filled Pennsylvania Avenue and bounced off the old granite buildings.

It felt like we have crossed an invisible threshold. The truth was ringing out and everyone now knows it, including the coward who was too scared to stay at home in his pillared gated mansion. Those of us who came went home feeling that WE have spoken, for ourselves and NOT through our "leaders." And we are speaking for the NEW MAJORITY.

33. So why in the EFF didn't we see this stuff on TV?
We barely saw ANY coverage of ANYTHING looking like a big march -- C-Span's shots of the crowd watching the speeches made it look like there were a few hundred people there.

God, how FRUSTRATING! I thought Katrina had woken up the mainstream media. I guess all they care about is natural disasters, not manmade ones like George W. Bush and his immoral war.

39. It was great to meet you and all the other DUers yesterday
It was my first march, and I was proud to march under the DU banner. It was a thrilling experience. The energy from the crowd was amazing. I'm still in DC until Tuesday, doing the tourist thing. I accidentally came across the freeper rally today, as I was walking back to my hotel from the National Museum of the American Indian. There were a few hundred people there, at most.

I took lots of pics. But I don't have a way to upload them from the hotel "business center", which is just a room with 4 pcs, a printer and a fax machine. I'll try to do that when I get home.

Anyway, if you've never been to a major protest, DO IT. It will leave you tired, but exhilerated.

42. Tell me what demoracy looks like!
I saw it this weekend too and it was powerful. I'm the one who posted about being scared Thursday night. I felt absolutely no fear after I got there but felt every other emotion known to humankind throughout our two days in DC, Hubby made me a tad nervous as he jumped into a crowd surrounding a police cruiser just before the march began. He was in photographer's heaven! Being new to the march thing I had no idea what was happening at first. People began chanting "Who's streets? OUR streets!" over and over. I saw several of DC's finest approach, one said to another "Officer, move that cruiser". He did, the crowd cheered and shortly thereafter we began to move. I have no idea where the march actually began. There were so, so many people at first we couldn't even walk, more like tiny shuffling baby steps. It was profoundly effecting to me, I would not have missed that experience for anything. Got to meet a few DUers at the Hawk and Dove, met people from absolutely everywhere out on the streets. There was sorrow and joy and a truly spectacular adrenaline rush throughout.
