Did Hussein offer to surrender prior to *'s disaster? |
|
I'm calling Chimp's war on terra The Great Disaster War of 2003.
I remembre seeing somehwere in DU that Hussein offered to surrender prior to the war. I'm arguing with a very stupid freeper (and winning, naturally)..

1. Yes, there was an offer through a 3rd party |
|
It was a big story in the NY Times. It was 100 times more legitimate than the debunked Osama's head offered to Clinton on a platter 3 times by the Sudan, as the person that conveyed the info about Saddam was a legitimate gov't representative, and not a Fox News correspondent like Mansoor Ijez (sp?) from the Sudan

2. Not that I've ever heard of. I don't recall anything to that effect being |
|
said. (oh shit, that sounded like Reagan talking about Iran Contra . . . except I'm being honest and he was . . . being Reagan).

6. Yeah but sometimes you just have to rile them up for the fun of it |
|
I like to get them going, stay calm and present the facts. Every time they are presented with undeniable facts, they change the subject or bring up Clinton or Teddy Kennedy. It is a laugh every time.

5. The last offer I heard about (a week or less before the invasion)... |
|
...Was that Saddam would go into exile somewhere, and Iraq would hold new elections.
The US said, 'no way', and scrambled for the excuse that the entire Ba'ath party had to go also now (which isn't what the US had said only a few months previously).
Like when the Bush admin continued to turn down the Afghanistan government's offer to turn over bin Laden in lieu of us invading, there was nothing that was going to stop Commander Bunnypants from starting his war.

would have had a say in how business & oil fields were divided. Not that Saddam would have had an actual 'real' election. Nobody is stupid enough to believe that. But the UN then would have had to go in. You know - with a force of 600,000 and UN procurement laws which would mean the insurgents would have had the option of going into business for themselves and no option to start and insurgency.

9. UN procurement laws say that the contract for rebuilding has to |
|
go to locals first. So there would have been a stampede of foreign money of all kinds to get with an Iraqi and do business. Sunnis too. All that rebuilding money would have come from corporations & governments all over the world.
I'm sure Halliburton would have found a way to do business.
Point is that Sunnis would have not had the option of insurgency since the American Generals plans for an invasion with 500,000 at least would have been followed.

Bush had issued him a deadline to surrender, or be invaded. Well, Saddam being Saddam missed the deadline, but when he realized our military really was heading for Iraq, he offered to surrender then. Since it was past the deadline Bush said no way and invaded. Now I'm sure there are archived articles out there that can prove this.

12. In his national speech before the attack, Bush |
|
publicly gave Saddam and his two sons 48 hours to leave the country or be invaded.
If he wanted to leave, he would have left.
At the time on DU, I was typing as loudly as I could that at the last minute Saddam would fly to Saudi Arabia and take the castle next to Idi Amin's while he planned his comeback.
I remember it clearly because I was so sure and so wrong.

But he did offer to step aside and hold elections within 6 months I beleive. It was through a third party - and the US failed to acknowledge the offer. I think that is how it was - going directly from memory...........
