Go there for Krugman and some great reporting. I don't know what I'm going to do without my NYT and I can't afford a subscription.

I just accessed it and I don't have a subscription. I'm registered on the site though and have been for a long time.

4. Some of it is restricted.
I think they label the subscription segment as "select" articles. There are still some things you can see for free.

3. Don't worry...
There are lots of great writers on the web. You'll get over the NYT putting themselves behind a paywall.

5. a great way around that
www.bugmenot.com

a central exchange of accounts/passwords so you don't have to register to view something.

10. How does that get around paying a subscription to see content on
the NYT site? Bugmenot is just good for getting around registration. That's quite a bit different than subscription.

6. Just the opinion columns, the rest remains free . . .
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 04:53 PM by goodhue
It is dissapointing but all the news content is still free.

7. check out library websites
Yes is sad they put so many things on the pay part of the Times, like Klugman and Dowd.

My local public library has a internet service which includes access to major databases such as ProQuest. And the NYTimes is completely free for those who have a Chicago Public Library card and access to the internet.

I wonder if your local or regional or county library has such a service for you? You might want to call them or check out the library's website.

Good luck.

8. I enjoy the NYT
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 05:02 PM by peaches2003
You will probably disagree, but I subscribed. I've been registered for years with the NYT Online and you still can get the news, editorials, and certain columns for free. But you can no longer get the best op-eds: Thomas Friedman, Maureen Dowd, Paul Krugman, David Brooks and others.

Well, it's their newspaper and they can do as they wish. But I realized how much I enjoy reading these columns online with my coffee first thing every morning and after a couple of days without them I subscribed. I realized I was only hurting myself by not subscribing and taking some enjoyment out of my life. Disagree if you wish, but it's cheaper per month than going to ONE movie, so I think I have my entertainment priorities in line.

12. Frankly, I'd rather read the news, book reviews,
magazine, Week in Review, and obituaries than the silly pundits, and all are free.

17. ???
Then, of course, you wouldn't need to subscribe, would you? So I'm not sure why you are bothering to post. The discussion here was about those who enjoy the op-ed and are or are not willing to pay for it.

13. Their model is backwards from the WSJ
WSJ puts news in a walled garden and opinion is a free buffet. Be interesting to see if Times's approach works.

14. The Editorials from Krugman, Rich and Dowd are still available
here on DU and on the Web. They are being posted. It's only the columnists and if you don't mind waiting a day or two you can read it all here.

I can still get my content for all the other daily articles online because I subscribed FREE to their web site years ago, though...so you aren't missing much except the archives and editorials.

15. it's frustrating, but after all
none of the news sites make any money, the only ones that do are things like Drudge that link to them. the Times took a trade-off, reducing the impact of their columnists (like the Journal did) in exchange for (hopefully) increased revenue. after all, the paper costs money, you pay for content there, why not online?

and no, I'm not a subscriber

16. at least the monthly rate should be 1/12 of $50
those frigging creeps. The monthly should be $4.16 and not $8.00.

That's like saying "Fuck you" to those of us who are on a tight monthly budget. pretty elitist.
