Basically she wasn't anything more than a narcissist hiding behind a veil of cynicism.

13. Caustic I can handle..
.... caustic and stupid I cannot.

I've read 2-3 of her essays/articles and I think she is certifyable. She's from the school of thought that says outrageousness for outrageousness sake is going to further your career - whether there is a glimmer of insight or wisdom in it is not important.

It works well for rock stars, less well for intellectual social critics.

17. You Gotta Get A Gimmick: by The Plaid Adder
Edited on Mon Sep-26-05 09:35 PM by norml
You Gotta Get A Gimmick
(to the tune of Stephen Sondheim's song of the same name from the hit musical Gypsy.)

(spoken dialogue)

LOUISE: Oh, I don't actually do theory.
CAMILLE PAGLIA: Something wrong with doing theory?
LOUISE: N-no, nothing, it's only I just can't write very well and my ideas aren't really very original or clearly expressed, and...
JACQUES LACAN: You think theirs are? Trust me, to be a theorist all you need is no talent.
JACQUES DERRIDA: Au contraire, Jacques, I believe that to write badly is not enough. You also need an idea that makes your work special.

(sings)

You can do your close reading
Till your hands are bleeding,
Write through the night till you're dead,
But until you get a gimmick, you're never going to get ahead.
Talk about aesthetics
Till you're apoplectic--
Explicate texts till you drop,
But until you get a gimmick, you're never going to get a job.

You can write
Real obscure,
Convoluted prose--
Tu n'auras pas la chance.
Me, I write
Real obscure
Convoluted prose--
But it's with a differance!

Any kinda structure
Will eventually rupture,
So why worry about what you me-ean?
Get yourself a gimmick, and play the deconstruction scene!

LACAN: You can write
Real obscure
Convluted prose--
That still won't do the trick.
Me, I write
Real obscure
Convoluted prose--
But it's all about my prick!

I celebrate the phallus,
Not out of spite and malice,
But just to win me fortune and fa-ame...
Get yourself a gimmick, the world will not forget your name!

PAGLIA: You can write
Really bad
And abusive prose--
Ain't gonna make you rich.
Me I write
Really bad
And abusive prose,
But I'm a colossal bitch!

Your career'll take off flying
Without your even trying
If you tell the boys what they wanna he-ear...
Get yourself a gimmick, the Man will further your career!

CHORUS (sung as a round): Do something different, anything that's different, and you'll be a big fat star!

LACAN:
You wanna play the palace?
Celebrate the phallus.
PAGLIA:
To be a big contender,
Just betray your gender.
DERRIDA:
If you wanna use 'em,
Boggle and confuse 'em!

CHORUS:
You're more than just a mimic
When you've got a gimmick!
Take a look how different we are...
Get yourself a gimmick and you, too,
Can be a star!

20. What would Derrida and Lacan want to do with Paglia?
Her thoughts are, basically, just grumblings. But lumping Paglia and Derrida with Paglia seems silly. She's from the hyper-arrogant Harold Bloom tradition of American conservative resentment. They're just French.

10. No, it's not you
she's an asshole.

She can put together a well-turned phrase and is capable of having an interesting thought, but she much prefers just being shocking and outrageous. It detracts from anything meaningful she might have to say.

I always figured she'd kill herself and leave a long, rambling note about the world having no place for a brilliant mind like hers the moment people stopped paying attention to her.

22. the thing I remember about her columns for Salon
was how often she would sing the praises of Rush Limbaugh. Extravagant compliments that would pop up in the middle of an essay and seemingly unconnected to anything else. It was very strange. I don't have to agree with someone in order to enjoy reading them (although it helps, ha!), but this weird rush worship caused me to lose interest.

During the presidential campaign she also spoke enthusiastically about then-candidate Bush and his manly way of swaggering across a tarmac. Swallowed hook/line/sinker his obviously fake he-man cowboy b.s. I had already stopped reading her by the time her column was discontinued, although she did write an interesting piece predicting disastrous consequences if Bush went ahead with the planned invasion of Iraq.

a good salary by doing so.

You tow the white privileged male line and you'll be paid quite handsomely, especially if you claim to be a "liberal", Democrat, are a cute blonde or brunette, and/or gay or a lesbian.

29. have some fun....read Molly Ivins on CPaglia (1991)
http://www.csdl.tamu.edu/~erich/misc/ivins_on_paglia

Austin, Texas --- ``So write about Camille Paglia,'' suggested the
editor. Like any normal person, I replied, ``And who the hell might
she be?''

Big cheese in New York intellectual circles. The latest rage. Hot
stuff. Controversial.

But I'm not good on New York intellectual controversies, ...

Read Paglia, says he, you'll have an opinion. So I did; and I do.

Christ! Get this woman a Valium!

Hand her a gin. Try meditation. Camille, honey, calm down!

....

...In addition to the intrinsic cultural superiority Ms. Paglia
attributes to herself from having grown up watching television (``It's
Howdy-Doody Time'' obviously made us all smarter), she also considers
her own taste in music to be of enormous significance. ....

...Whatever our other aims may have been, no one in the feminist
movement ever thought you are what you wear. The only coherent fashion
statement I can recall from the entire movement was the suggestion
that Mrs. Cleaver, Beaver's mom, would on the whole have been a
happier woman had she not persisted in vacuuming while wearing high
heels. This, I still believe.
