Tomas Ovalle of AP took a photo of a poor, half drowned cat in Erath, La. |
|
clinging to what appears to be a barbed wire fence and, needless to say, looking 100% miserable. The photo appeared in the Chicago Sun Times today on page 3 over an article by Julia Silverman, also, of the AP.
I tried to find a link for the photo to post it and to contact the photographer or the reporter but I can't find one.
I hope to God that Mr. Ovalle didn't leave the cat behind after he took his startling photo but I have heard of photographers that do that - capture a person or desperate animal in need and walk away.

1. I've shot news photos for small weeklies... |
|
including storm coverage of a Nor'easter that took human lives.I have walked hip deep in the Atlantic in November during a gale and snow to get the best angle to show the devastation of beach front homes, while electric wires lay yards away...Best bet-if he could rescue the cat-he did....the best photos always come from those best attuned to the humanity and resonance of what they shoot....A lesser man would have shot property damage, which always impresses....my best shots showed the destruction, yes but I always looked for the small human element,a destroyed dresser with the owners clothes splaying out,or a fridge with a drawing still held by magnets...It AIN'T ghoulishness...it is a way to connect...Again,if he humanly could,I'll bet the cat is ok...

5. sorry. catnhatnh, if I knew I'd broadcast it far and wide. |
|
What I had was a phone number for Mr. Ovalle. Didn't know if I should post it in public.
Sure hope the cat was rescued, but don't know.

6. Understand that what he shot.... |
|
....may have been a situation past saving...if the water was rising or running, then saving the cat could have been life threatening to the photo guy...I have to say that if I saw a situation as I described (a cat about to die and past my ability to save) I would be twice as determined to get it into print...again I pray the cat is safe-but photogs have emotions too...
