Bush to cut length of week |
|
Edited on Tue Sep-27-05 12:19 PM by ck4829
Bush has said that the most oil and gas is used on Monday.
So, guess what?
Next week, there won't be a Monday.
This may, as usual, upset the 'christian' Right because they want the week to be 7 days long.

10. What I think would be ideal is a one day work week to save fuel ..... |
|

5. actually, a 4 day work week would help |
|
if every company converted to four ten-hour days instead of five 8-hour days, a lot of gas would be saved, and even less traffic and accidents. Just taking one monday off won't help much though

I was talking seriously about this issue with my husband yesterday. If schools cut down to four longer days it would save a LOT of bus fuel and utilities.
Personally I would love to see us do some major life adjustments in order to conserve energy. It would change the national consciousness in a big way.
And Friday's off wouldn't be too shabby, either.
But I do realize this would be a hassle for parents who need childcare on Fridays. But perhaps if the schools did it first then more industry, private sector, public sector, etc., would follow and we would make a big change in our lifestyle. And perhaps with the money saved from fuel costs the cities could subsidize Friday childcare?
I'm dreaming.

12. Totally agree with the concept, but........ |
|
Everything would have to be done in coordination. If schools lengthen their schedule so they only need to be open 4 days a week, that means, if both parents work, either 1 parent takes off on the closed day and loses pay, or has to pay a premium price for child care. While the energy savings overall would be significant, for that family the gas savings would be minuscule compared to the lost earnings or cost of day care.
For hourly workers, that's very difficult, because often they have no control over their schedule. For salaried employees, they will either have to take a paid day off, or a day w/o pay.
Until all companies offer flex schedules, or go to a set 4 day work week, this will end up hurting once again the lower and middle class.

17. I know this thread is dead and you might not get this |
|
but it occurred to me yesterday (duh!) that while a four-day week leaves a hole for parents to fill, it would probably provide late PM childcare for free with schools closing late. I don't know if it would make up the difference, however.
The solution to me, is to walk to school. It would take some serious re-districting but relying on busses to get kids to school is probably very old think.

14. Did he really say this because cutting the work week to four days |
|
would help with conservation.

I think I took the concept and ran with it even though it was not his intent. In other words, I changed the sub and I probably should have reposted it because it is a good discussion.
