Christers on Ice: Atlanta Hostage shared her crystal meth with captor
ATLANTA -- Ashley Smith, the woman held hostage for hours after the March 11 Fulton County Courthouse shootings, discloses in a new book that she gave alleged gunman Brian Nichols drugs the night he held her captive.

-snip-

Nichols asked her for marijuana, she writes, but she had only a small amount of crystal methamphetamine. She thought offering him the drug might curry favor, but she says she refused to take the drug with him.

"I was not going to die tonight and stand before God, having done a bunch of ice up my nose," she writes.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-0509270127sep27,1,4341435.story

It's not that she gave meth to a keyed-up killer, but that the media flogged her bible-reading as the way she saved herself, that makes me say Oh, Brother.

You shouldn't be surprised she's revealing this in her new book, "Unlikely Angel: The Untold Story of the Atlanta Hostage Hero," which she will start flogging starting tomorrow with an appearance on Oprah.

1. Let me get this straight.
It's not OK to "stand before God, having done a bunch of ice up my nose"...

But it's OK to buy the "ice" and have it in your home?

God sure has changed since my required college chapel attendance days.

Never know when a crazed druggie will ramble on by.

Should I try to score some heroin, too? White or brown?

Maybe a few caps of Oxy? Xanax would be handy--puts 'em, to sleep.

Pot --nah--don't want 'em too paranoid.

Ecstacy! He'd lovingly turn himself in! That's the ticket.

any other great advice?

Can't wait for the Lifetime movie. Any mention of drugs will be long gone. The story will be changed so that Ashley Smith was only hanging around the courthouse because she's a crusading advocate for Xian orphanages in the Third World.

In a cameo, the cast of Touched By An Anus will descend and whisper their favorite prayers in her ear as she yaks with the kidnapper. Oh, and in the script, the kidnapper will become an atheist who thinks life is not worth living until the Surprising And Heartwarming Ending.

Damn, I need a drink...

15. To be fair - and I'm trying to be, really I am -
I guess I would do the same thing if I thought it would save my life. If I was tied up by someone who had already killed and thought he had nothing left to lose, I would grasp at any straw I could. And maybe if I did meth, I would think offering my drugs would help. But I don't do meth and I don't do Jesus, so it's hard for me to imagine what good either would have done. I guess she's lucky she hit on the right combination.

31. God routinely uses flawed people
Read the Bible pretty thoroughly in my mis-spent youth.

Unlike what all the Bible thumpers tell you, pretty much everyone in the Bible who is anyone was a sincerely screwed up person. Just going off memory:

Noah --- incest with his daughters
David -- adulterer, murderer(sp?)
Solomon -- multiple wives, borderline unrepentant follower of pagan gods, hedonist
About half the "kings" did something stupid
Mary Magdalene --- likely prostitute or adulteress
Various apostles -- tax collectors (i.e., collaborators with Rome who skim for themselves).
Peter --- coward
Paul --- early hired killer of Christians

Indeed, if you look at the genealogies of Jesus, you'll see his was pretty much the lowest road, rouge's gallery, of Jews necessary to meet the theological requirements possible and still be of the "House of David."

The real theme is that no one is beyond redemption. (Being that each of the above admitted their shortcomings and tried not to do what they did.)

Of course, your average Holy Roller won't tell you that.

53. Mary Magdalene - bad rap
Mary Magdalene --- likely prostitute or adulteress

Just to address one in your list, evidence suggests that it is much more unlikely that Mary Magdalene was a prostitute.

http://www.magdalene.org/faq.php#prost
--------------------------------------------------------------
Was Mary Magdalene a prostitute?

Well, we don't know for sure, but probably not. There is nothing in the Gospels, or anywhere else for that matter, that says that she was a prostitute, a fallen woman, a harlot, or a sinner. Nowhere. Nothing. Nada.

Her reputation as a redeemed prostitute has two likely origins:

1. She was associated with Mary of Bethany, who performed the anointing of Jesus in the Gospel of John. The woman who performed the anointing in the Gospel of Luke was an anonymous "sinner" from the city. It is assumed that the sinner woman was a prostitute, but even that is an extrapolation. So if Mary Magdalene was Mary of Bethany, and Mary of Bethany was the anonymous sinner from Luke, and if the anonymous sinner from Luke was a prostitute, well, there goes Mary Magdalene's good name.

2. Mary Magdalene was relieved of seven demons. In the Middle Ages, there were seven cardinal sins, and Mary Magdalene's seven demons were often thought to be related to them. Primarily, Mary Magdalene was associated with the sins of lust and vanity, but the correspondence of seven demons with seven sins was just too good for the medieval mind to pass up. This association contributed to Mary Magdalene's sinful reputation.

68. It was Lot, not Noah.
Noah only had sons, and they were married when they all went in the ark. Lot was the one who had sex with his daughters while he was drunk (they were worried they would never get married and have kids is how the story goes).

Noah was discovered naked and so drunk he was passed out after testing the new wine from his new vineyard, and his son Shem found him and told his brothers about it as a joke. The other brothers walked backwards and covered him up with a blanket, and Shem got cursed for not doing the same for some reason.

82. Stand corrected
I stand corrected. Somewhere I heard that there was incest involved in this drunken process, apparently with Shem. (The Net is full of speculation on this issue; Google.) Either way, the point is that this was a seriously messed up family.

Same with MM --- deserved bad rap or no --- she had issues.

(The bit about MM being Jesus's wife in other posts, however, is pure speculation and contrary to the little we do know. Makes for a good book and ample conspiracy theories, however.)

Regardless of the specifics of any of the people (I figured some Catholic was going to jump me for dissing Peter), the point is the same ---- pretty much in the Bible were very, very flawed people.

Personally, I find that very refreshing.

24. Oh yeah, I'm sure the publishers knew
Who would buy a book just to read the account they already read in the papers? You gotta have a sensational revelation to move product.

Here are some more quotes from the book:

On her battle with drugs:

"I haven't touched drugs since walking out of my apartment on March 12. ... Initially I did not volunteer the information about the drugs . ... I was afraid. Later I came forward and shared the details about the drugs with the appropriate authorities, but I regret not having done so at the very beginning. I remember what Jesus said: The truth will set you free. That's how I want to live my life--I want to be an honest person and experience the freedom that goes with it."

(In other words, I'm telling you about it before someone else spills the beans.)

On her faith:

- "Instead of running away from God's voice, now I seek it and try to learn from his words. ... I still pray all the time for the friends I knew in the drug scene. ... I pray that what has happened in my life will impact them in some way. I want them to know that God loves them no matter what they've done."

(But if drugs helped save your life why would you want your friends to stop taking them? What if a crazed killer burst into their homes?)

Lab tests would've shown when and what that guy ingested and realized that she had provided the ice.

Either that, or forensics found the evidence when they searched her house.

So... she was probably confronted with the facts, but authorities kept it quiet?

Curiouser and curiouser.

37. A brief moment of silence...
...for what must be the last remaining "GOP feel-good story" becoming ashes in their mouths.

Everything else from wars to tax cuts to liquified cerebral cortices has exploded in their mugs like a joke cigar, and now this one too has passed.

Found this by by googling...I'm sure every wingnut jumped on this bandwagon when it hit in March but this one's particularly sweet... from AnnCoulter.slum

In Smith's apartment, Nichols bound Smith's feet and hands and put her in the bathtub. Later, at Smith's request, Nichols allowed her to hop from the bathroom into the bedroom, where she began talking to him.

In short order, Smith was reading aloud to Nichols from the Christian book "The Purpose Driven Life" — in direct violation of his constitutional right to never hear any reference to God, in public or private, for any purpose, ever, ever, ever! For more on this right, go to the "People for the American Way" Web site.

<snip>

Smith knew all about Nichols' violent depredations from TV. Yet she saw him not as a monster, but as one of God's creatures. Most Christians — most people — have trouble seeing the humanity of people who take our parking spots. Smith could see God's hand in a multiple murderer holding her hostage. By showing him genuine Christian love, Smith turned Nichols from a beast to a brother in Christ. This phenomenon, utterly unknown to liberals, is what's known as a "miracle." Top that, Paul Krugman!

<snip>

This trampling of our Constitution — I mean this conversation — lasted long into the night. (I reckon! :eyes: ) They watched Nichols' shooting people on TV. Nichols said he couldn't believe he was that man. In the morning, Smith made Nichols eggs and pancakes for breakfast. Then she walked out of the apartment to pick up her daughter and to call 911. The last thing Nichols said as Smith was leaving was to say hello to her daughter for him. When the police arrived, Nichols surrendered without incident, an utterly transformed human being.

<snip>

Smith saved the soul of a man on a killing spree by talking to him about Christianity. But liberals think this won't work with the Muslims? We ought to fly this Ashley Smith to Saudi Arabia. We could just make her a box lunch every day and send her on her way.

I can hear repukes nationwide moaning like Dr. Smith on Lost in Space..."Ohhh, the pain...the pain!"

42. It is normal for regular users..
to become very "religious" (or so they think). I know two.

Hypocritical? Yes. Do they realize it? No. In fact, it is used as justification. "Everything on God's green Earth happens for a reason." Or, "Everytime I do something I pray to God to guide my hands, so I *know* that I am making the right decisions, I am where God wants me to be."

It's really quite sad. And infuriating when they preach.

64. True, but...
It is everywhere. And won't go away anytime soon, regardless of these laws taking ephedrine off the shelves. Most people don't realize you don't need ephedrine to make meth. Anywho. It's everywhere- and honestly, it isn't just that red areas and meth coincide, it is poor areas and meth. Meth is the cheapest and easiest to find drug on the market today.

80 percent of the meth in this country is made in Mexico, not local bathtub labs. Meth will be with us for a long time.

Maybe she's a phony, a complete mess, an opportunist, or whatever. The fact remains that she was instrumental in his capture, and for that she deserves a lot of credit.

Maybe we should all keep a little ice or crack around in case we're taken hostage sometime. ;)

66. Oh who really cares
Whatever it takes. It worked. She's alive, he turned himself in.

It's not that odd that someone would have drugs and christian books around...or that she didn't want to face god with drugs up her nose. Many addicts try to go clean through belief in a higher power, many keep using things while they also wish they could stop.If I did a drug and believed I'd face god one night I might have reacted the same way.

In a way giving drugs and reading those books to him...nutured both sides of him. The side that wanted to be bad and the side that wanted to be good.

She's just a person. Why would we judge it?

88. Why does every GOP hero turn out to be completely fucked up?
The best example: Local bitch Connie Morris, Kansas Board of Ed. One of the leading people to push ID and Creationism on the state, and who wants parents to have to "opt in" for sex ed.

A few years back she accused her opponent (a US citizen) of being an illegal alien, and she got away with it.

She has a tell all book that recounts her days (more like years) of sexual deviancy and drug abuse.

And now she has the nerve to dictate morality to all Kansans.

71. Is it crystal meth or Christianity that makes you think things like that?
Which is it, crystal meth or Christianity that makes you think crazy things like "I was not going to die tonight and stand before God, having done a bunch of ice up my nose"?

Also, doesn't that sound like only half a thought?

A DU pop quiz: How would you complete Ashley Smith's thought?

OPTION A:

"I was not going to die tonight and stand before God, having done a bunch of ice up my nose but I was pretty comfortable going to stand before God having supplied my personal stash of ice up someone else's nose."

OR

OPTION B:

"I was not going to die tonight and stand before God, having done a bunch of ice up my nose but if I wasn't going to be standing before God that night, I probably would have used my stash of ice up my nose instead of wasting it up someone else's nose."

OR

OPTION C:

"I was not going to die tonight and stand before God, having done a bunch of ice up my nose but __________________."

(insert your own continuation of Ashley Smith's thought)

83. That metallic clank you just heard was her halo hitting the floor
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 09:56 AM by rocknation
From WTVR online:
Smith says in her book that as the night wore on--after Nichols had snorted some of Smith's meth--she tried to win Nichols' trust by talking about her faith in God...

She writes that she...reveal(ed) a five-inch scar (to Nichols)...the aftermath of a car wreck caused by drug-induced psychosis. She says she let go of the steering wheel when she heard a voice saying, "Let go and let God."

Her faith in God didn't quite trump her faith in meth, evidently, or she WOULDN'T have had any in the house. As for the voice she heard, well, now there's reasonable doubt as to whether it was God or the drugs talking. I mean, WHY would God tell you to let go of a steering wheel?

Don't get me wrong--I'm glad she got out of it alive. But her contention that it was purely God's work, and her unwillingness to tell the police the whole story up front, makes her "unlikely angel" status phony and her book a put-up job.

86. Crystal Meth for Christ
Just another pathetic example of the hypocrisy governing the lives of so many so-called Christians. I lived for 8 years with a born-again (from Mexico where the evangelicals are FERVENTLY anti-catholic and rigid in their beliefs). I have no problem with someone's personal faith, but that is just what it is (PERSONAL)...Nice to see someone falsely praised for their christian purity get exposed. I'm surprised she admitted it, though...

I love the part where she says that she released the steering wheel because she heard a voice telling her, "Let go, let god."...
