What I learned from Michael Brown today
Thank you Mr. Brown for informing me that ice is not considered essential during the aftermath of a hurricane.According to you, we only use the ice to try to keep our "hamburger from defrosting".

Hmmmmm, let's see. I just went four days without electricity in South Louisiana because of Hurricane Rita. Let's see what the weather is like today:

ACADIA-ALLEN-AVOYELLES-BEAUREGARD-CALCASIEU-CAMERON-EVANGELINE-HARDIN-IBERIA-JASPER-JEFFERSON-JEFFERSON DAVIS-LAFAYETTE-LOWER ST. MARTIN-NEWTON-ORANGE-RAPIDES-ST. LANDRY-ST. MARY-TYLER-UPPER ST. MARTIN-VERMILION-VERNON-INCLUDING THE CITIES OF...ABBEVILLE...ALEXANDRIA...BEAUMONT/PORT ARTHUR...CAMERON...CROWLEY...DERIDDER...JASPER...
JENNINGS...KOUNTZE...LAFAYETTE...LAKE CHARLES...LEESVILLE...
MARKSVILLE...MORGAN CITY...NEW IBERIA...NEWTON...OBERLIN...
OPELOUSAS...ORANGE...ST. MARTINVILLE...VILLE PLATTE...WOODVILLE
245 PM CDT TUE SEP 27 2005

...HEAT ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 7 PM WEDNESDAY...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN LEAGUE CITY...IN
CONJUNCTION WITH THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE OFFICE IN LAKE
CHARLES...HAS EXTENDED THE HEAT ADVISORY THROUGH WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON . AN ABNORMALLY STRONG RIDGE OF HIGH PRESSURE OVER WEST TEXAS...WILLCONTINUE TO DOMINATE THE WEATHER ACROSS SOUTHEAST TEXAS AND SOUTHWESTLOUISIANA.

RELATIVE HUMIDITY LEVELS WILL REMAIN HIGH IN THE WAKE OF RITA...DUE TO ABUNDANT MOISTURE REMAINING AT THE SURFACE. THIS WILL LIMIT
OVERNIGHT COOLING...WITH TEMPERATURES EXPECTED TO REMAIN IN THE MID
AND UPPER 70S...WITH LOW 80S ALONG THE LOUISIANA COAST. ULTIMATELY...LITTLE RELIEF IN THE UNUSUALLY WARM AND MUGGY CONDITIONS ARE EXPECTED TONIGHT.

CLEAR SKIES ASSOCIATED WITH THIS HIGH PRESSURE REGION WILL
COMBINE WITH HEATING ON WEDNESDAY TO PRODUCE HIGH TEMPERATURES IN THE
MID 90S. THE COMBINATION OF THE HIGH HUMIDITY LEVELS AND UNSEASONABLY WARM AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES WILL PRODUCE HEAT INDICES AROUND 105 DEGREES DURING THE AFTERNOON HOURS.

CONSIDERING THE LACK OF POWER AND THEREFORE AIR CONDITIONING
ACROSS THE REGION...COUPLED WITH THE NEED FOR MANY TO SPEND A
SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TIME OUTDOORS PARTICIPATING IN THE CLEANUP AND
RELIEF EFFORT AFTER HURRICANE RITA...IT IS ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT
TO TAKE MEASURES TO PROTECT YOURSELF FROM THE DANGEROUS HEAT.

IF AT ALL POSSIBLE...RESTRICT STRENUOUS ACTIVITY IN THE DIRECT
SUNLIGHT DURING THE PEAK HEATING HOURS. IF OUTSIDE...STAY HYDRATED BY
DRINKING PLENTY OF WATER...EVEN IF NOT THIRSTY. YOUR BODY CAN LOSE UP
TO A GALLON OF WATER AN HOUR THROUGH PERSPIRATION. ALCOHOLIC AND
CAFFEINATED BEVERAGES CAN INCREASE THE RATE OF WATER LOSS IN YOUR
BODY...INCREASING THE RISK OF HEAT EXHAUSTION OR STROKE. WEAR
LIGHTWEIGHT...LIGHT-COLORED...LOOSE-FITTING CLOTHING. WEAR A HAT TO
SHIELD YOURSELF FROM THE SUN...AND USE A SUNSCREEN TO REDUCE POSSIBLE
SUNBURN.

IF YOU FEEL DIZZY...OR NAUSEA...AND YOU ARE NOT PERSPIRING THEN
TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION TO FIND A COOLER LOCATION AND CONTINUE DRINKING
WATER. THIS COULD BE A SIGN THAT YOU ARE SUFFERING FROM HEAT
EXHAUSTION WHICH COULD LEAD TO HEAT STROKE...A CONDITION RESULTING
FROM EXCESSIVE EXPOSURE TO INTENSE HEAT. HEAT STROKE IS CHARACTERIZED
BY HIGH FEVER...COLLAPSE...AND SOMETIMES COULD LEAD TO CONVULSIONS OR
EVEN COMA.

PETS CAN ALSO SUCCUMB TO THE EFFECTS OF EXCESSIVE HEAT. PETS MUST HAVE ADEQUATE DRINKING WATER AND A SHADY PLACE TO REST. DO NOT KEEP
PETS IN CARS WITH WINDOWS ROLLED UP...EVEN PARTIALLY.

This is what the weather has been like for the past four days, but according to Michael Brown, ice is not a necessity.

Kiss my @#$ you incompetent hack!

12. No insult to Portland intended, unless you guys start throwing
big outrageous drunken parties with all those ice cubes. I am sure it is cheaper to store ice in Portland than in a hot climate, but why did they have to give that ice a tour of the country first?

3. Some of us would like
to turn Brownie's face into hamburger. I am sure that all the other items suggested in the NWS Adisory to protect against the heat are difficult if not impossible to come by. I'm impressed by your ability to contain your rage.

Believe me, there are many of us in other parts of the country who wish we could send you ice -- if nothing else.

Good luck to you and all your neighbors, my friend.

17. The town I live in has about 80% of the power back
but a lot of other areas have less than 50% of the customers they service back up. Some of the harder hit areas are less than 30% back up.

Don't even mention FEMA to the people around here. Here's how FEMA is handling Hurricane Rita:

We have about 5,000 Hurricane Katrina evacuees here with us, and we have NEVER had a local FEMA office for these people to go to. FEMA was supposed to open a office here last week (three weeks after Katrina), but FEMA shipped all their personnel to Pensacola before Rita came through. They just sent them to a hotel there and told them to have a good time and wait until we let you know when it is safe to return to New Iberia. We got a call today from a FEMA "Rapid Response" team (what a joke to call anything related with FEMA rapid response)that FEMA in Washington said that it was ok to return to this area tomorrow. Tomorrow.....4 days after Rita hit.

20. They think that there is more than enough blame to go around
but they cut Blanco and Nagin some slack because they know the condition our state is (was) in, very very poor with limited resources. We are used to being last at everything. (Although we sometimes rate 1 spot higher than Mississippi in some things.....there is a certain perverse pride in being 49th instead of 50th, go figure). It's the Feds they are pissed at and it won't matter how many times Brownie tries to blame Blanco and Nagin, or how many times Bush comes for a photo-op, they will always blame the Federal Government for making us look like a third world country. It was the whole "floating dead bodies in the streets of New Orleans" thing that got to them. The Feds were here and in charge, and there were still people dying and bodies floating around the city. It did not go over well, and they will forever blame the Feds.

23. After the first full day without power you pretty much trash everything
in the refrigerator and freezer. I keep 8 bags of ice in my freezer all the time. Even with this much ice in my freezer I have found that after the first 24 hours without power things pretty much have to go. A lot of people have generators, or a small ice chest that runs off propane or batteries, so they can keep a limited quantity of things like milk and lunch meat cool. Other than than, it's pretty much spaghetti-os and other gourmet treats from a can.
