My F/U mountain neighbor & his dynamite: FEMA.
He claims to be with FEMA and he does disappear during emergencies like Katrina/Rita. But otherwise, he hangs out in his mountain home (only home, I think). He rides around drunk, almost every day, on a 4-wheel ATV (with a side-arm). Fortunately, I seldom see him on the trails or logging roads near our property .. but other neighbors do have problems with him. Some neighbors say that he is bi-polar and on medication. I don't know. All of that I can either ignore or live with.

What I don't like is his access to dynamite. He has told neighbors that he has access to HE (high explosives) through his job at FEMA. Every New Years and July 4th he blows a couple of sticks near midnight (when he is probably drunkest). We first heard it on New Year's Eve 2003. It woke us at 11:45 pm and I told Dr. D., "H.E." He blew a second stick at midnight.

I knew the sound and the concussion of HE from many a mortar and rocket attack in Vietnam, Republic of. But that was before I knew of his access to dynamite. The next day a neighbor friend told me the story. I said, "Well has anyone checked on him to make sure he is not hurt." She answered, "Everybody up here hopes that he kills himself." He is known as "FEMA guy."

3. Could you tip off a local paper about this fellow? Or are you
too far back in the boonies to HAVE a local paper?

And may I add - welcome home.

2. great story
I wonder what FEMA Guy's resume looks like--which degree of crony he is, for example.

5. And has anyone ever called the cops on him for this? re: dynamite
Seems blowing up dynamite just for fun and in proximity to places of habitation would be in violation of some sort of protection and safety law.

7. I've thought of that. BUT ...
What if the Transylvania Sheriff's Department considers (or sympathizes with) him as legit LEO (Law Enforcement Officer)? He might get tipped off and shoot my dog, Nick-Nick, or me, or Dr. D. Or blow up our place. No, we are way, way out in the wilds.

This is one reason we put this beautiful, beloved place on the market six weeks ago. In addition to FEMA Guy, we have at least two other mountain neighbors who are nuts. And armed. I don't need the worry.

On Friday we sell the condo in downtown Greenville in the AM, and then buy a great 1910 Prairie House in the PM. I have this mountain house priced to sell, so our total situation should change in the next few months.

13. Well, first off,
It sounds like you live in an area similar to that where I grew up and still live near.

Second, I hate to see you nudged out by some idiot, though you imply that it's not the sole reason for your decision.

Your post really hits home, because I own property where I grew up, and I'm very damned attached to it.

But the folks who live there are so nuts that I can't live there, and instead live in a city. A great city, but a city.

Sorry to hear it. I've met my own versions of FEMA guy, so I understand the deal here.

Good luck.

16. Thanks Steve .. you read well between the lines.
The mountain house has become a solo retreat for me. Dr. DemoTex has only been here about six weekends this year. I do not need a solo retreat. At 57 and recently displaced from Dallas, I need to make friends. The mountain house was to be a place of congregation every weekend, but it is not. It is just too isolated. That no longer works. Big mistake. My mistake. Cut the loss. As much as I love it, it is gone. But how do I tell Nick-Nick? He runs wild here (the panther not withstanding!).

17. Your dog will understand.
As long as he's with you, he'll be fine.

When I make that choice, Charlie will go along.

15. Rats! You never really got to enjoy NC
I am so sorry you had to meet the Deliverance freaks that inhabit our mountains...they are scary as hell, too.

What state are you and Mrs/Dr/Demo moving to next?

18. We are really SC residents.
On Friday we sell our downtown Greenville, SC, condo and buy a great old Prairie House off of Augusta Road. But we did enjoy NC! We love NC! We will buy and build again in NC. Just not so far back in the wilds. Hell, it might be moot. We might not ever sell the place. That will suit me!

11. Bingo .. SH!
I'm the treasurer of the property owners' association out here. All we collect is road maintenance dues (we have private gravel roads .. non-gated community). FEMA Guy is in arrears. And he is bitching about the last grading of his road (gall!). Maybe I can look a little closer into his situation. What a jerk! The road maintenance fee is only $178/year. The fire department and EMTs can't get down washed out roads.

20. I am thinking a website with "The Chronicles of FEMA Guy"....
There was one a while back about some guys redneck neighbor complete with pictures and great narration. It told about all the neighbors exploits (with pictures) that ranged from incomplete building projects to art-deco mail boxes... It was hysterical but finally he took it down because he could not afford the traffic. Something to think about anyway...
