I am fed up with the misogyny on the right.
Our patriarchal culture is rapidly turning into fear and loathing of women around here. It's once again progressing beyond the desire to control reproduction to teaching the next generation of young men that women are sub-human.

The behavior of the Young Republicans at Saturday night's memorial service and an email I received this morning from a local radio personality are indicative of the trend I am witnessing in my area. I hope this is isolated and not a sign of things to come though I have my doubts.

It's absolutely disgusting to see how they can pander to the female vote through a thinly veiled wall of hatred.

Vent over. Thank you.

1. Sad to say that it also exists (though slightly veiled) on the left .

5. I'm sure it's anywhere to some degree or another...
but do you think a liberal at a conservative rally would shout down a speaker by slurring her gender or responding to her message? *shrug* I don't know.

7. The sexist here is not in public and it is usually directed
toward public figures on the opposing side but it is done regularly.

20. Yes, and it is done even towards our own side, or women in general
Aside from the obvious "Ann the Man" kind of comments, phrases like "pink tutu Democrats" or "growing a pair" are misogynist as well, creating the assumption that manly attributes are good, lack of them bad, as phrases like "media whores," "presstitutes," and other promiscuity phrases show. (Comparing lack of professional integrity to women who have frequent sex implies badness, but calling the media "studs" or "Gigolos" would not have the same negative connotation.)

Then there are the basic assumptions all society has. Start a thread asking which actresses people think of as most talented, and over half the comments will equate talent with sexual attractiveness. (Comments like "Jennifer Connally used to be really talented, look how hot she was then." "She's still that talented, look at this picture.") Start a thread on male actors, and you will get comments about character development, style, etc.

Lots of misogyny around here. IMO.

4. We had a local peace rally and memorial service..
on Saturday night to coincide with the DC events. The Young Republicans hastily pulled together a counter protest. Their signs were mostly about Cindy Sheehan and were brutal. We had several women speakers and the heckling directed at their gender over the bullhorns was just nasty. It was clear that the hatred extended beyond the peace movement and was exacerbated by the fact that the speakers were female.

12. Sheesh, why do conservatives recoil in horror because John Kerry
mentioned that Cheney's openly gay daughter is . . . well, gay, but they have no qualms about heckling a grieving mother whose son perished in the war that they embrace?

15. You do realize we're gonna want names, right?
Especially if any of those young neo-cons used the "c-word" to describe Cindy. I'm not one to censor, but I'm a little weary of that word right now.

23. Yikes!
But what do we expect from Neaderthals like those.

They court women by pulling them along by the hair, fer crying out loud.

3. You'd think that by 2005....
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 09:11 AM by Triana
...they'd have gotten over their control-freak urges. (SOME) men and their little insecurities is what drives this crap.

(edited to add SOME men, because all of them aren't mysogenist creeps - the conservatives who are running this country seem to *all* be though)

6. They are trying to turn back the clock on everything
Progress is the antithesis of religious radicals regardless of what religion you follow. It puts a stopper in their desire to control unwanted forms of mass behaviour and free thinking.

9. I think this is an area where religious radicalism is
sadly spilling over into so-called secular mores.

I do agree that it is a reactionary stance. Most definitely!

11. The fact that they are perfectly ok with
implementing 'democracy' in Iraq even though the women there now have fewer rights than before really burns me. I'm certain it's a reflection of what they desire in this country.

I also do not understand the women that support these men & their policies.

19. I came out of Quizno's the other day...
and found a complete asshole parked next to me. In an SUV (of course), covered with Dubya propaganda.

And taking positions of importance on BOTH back drivers side and passenger windows were two HUGE "W stands for Women" stickers. :puke:

GOD I wished I hadn't been in a hurry-- I was going to scribble out a REALLY nasty note to whoever it was.

The bright spot was that I think I know who it was. Two older people came in while I was paying, and stood back from the counter a little bit.

I'm positive they were eyeing my anti-Bush pin on my purse, since they were kind of glaring at me. Hope they got an eyeful. Idiots.

If I'd had my trusty picture of Gerri Santoro (dead woman who died during a back alley abortion) to stick under their windshield, it would have gone on there.

21. This is available at one of the cafe press shops,
link below. I rotate bumper stickers on the inside of my back windshield & this one generates more negative reaction that any other sticker I have.

13. I'm fed up with misogyny, PERIOD
Right-wing, left-wing, authoritarian, libertarian, centrist, I honestly couldn't care less.

Women have proven their worth in society over and over again. Truth be told, there's a lot of men who have yet to prove their own worth in society. And some of them are the ones who are trying to keep women down.

ginbarn, crispini, fudge stripe cookays, WolverineDG, progmom, snot, anarchy1999 "F", sonias, VelmaD, DeposeTheBoyKing, Skittles, WestHoustonDem, babylonsister, BeHereNow, and all the other female DUers that my feeble little brain can't remember right now - I love you all.

That includes those I debate in the Gungeon. :loveya:

14. There's the blatant,
then there's the subtle. I don't know which one makes me more angry.

I have a 'handyman' doing work at my house. He's tried to talk me out of almost everything I want done because he says his way is better (since he is a man and I am only a woman, he would certainly know more and better). Just a minute ago I, mere woman that I am, had to show him how to cut a hole in slate floor tile because he couldn't get his male supervisor on the phone to instruct him how.

was inter-generational. I'm referring to the kids and young adults I saw in their midst as they slurred females.
