How does delaying an Iraq pullout help anything? |
|
Obviously, we're not gonna "win" in any reasonable sense of the word. The only question is whether we pull out now or later--unless we're ready to settle in for the Forever War.
Here is the problem as I see it: Who will go in there & cover our withdrawal? If you say "The UN," that's too global an answer (no pun intended). The UN is composed of individual member states. Which of them should send peacekeeping forces? To oversimplify (and to state the obvious), the choice comes down to Muslim or non-Muslim forces, or a mix.
I think right now, Europeans would neither be accepted nor be very willing to go in to clean up our mess. Who, then? East-Asian troops? How would the Iraqis react to having their streets patrolled by, say, Chinese? Or Indians? Canadians? How would they react to Sunni foreigners? Not well, in any of these cases, I would predict. My bet is that any peacekeeping force would come under fire and be pulled out shortly.
I fear that Iraq is too broken to fix. We can't do it, the rest of the world can't do it. The longer we stay, the deeper will be the wounds. There is no way out but OUT.

I cannot understand why so many people continue to resist seeing this.

2. The only thing delaying helps is halliburton's bottom line. |
|
The war is wrong. The war is a lie. The war is immoral. The war is not about freedom, it's about greed and vanity. Call a spade a spade. Don't rationalize it, end it. Me thinks that too many so-called dems are more loyal to their corporate masters who are profiting MADLY off of this war than they are to their constituents.

If Iraq is broken, the coalition might as well leave. Let the Iraqis have a civil war. Watch from the sidelines on your big screen TVs. Console yourself with the knowledge you tried your best and sacrificed the lives and health of many of your soldiers. You are correct, no other nation will send their troops to Iraq to die.
Hey, think of it this way, had you not invaded, the Iraq Baath party would have continued to govern Iraq until Saddam died, then his psycho sons would have taken over. Sooner or later the regime would have decayed and Iraq would have collapsed into civil war anyway. You just moved events forward a generation.

4. They're already having a civil war with us present. |

We had neither the obligation nor the power to effectively change the government of Iraq. Our presence is making things worse for Iraq, for the world at large, and not incidentally, for us. Our continued presence will not make things better.
