Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 07:08 PM by Melodybe
Sure it's Capital Hill Blue, but they have been right before. Bolton/Novak/Miller for starters.

Think about it, the tide has turned, the house of cards falling, what do you think it's like in the WH right now?

Enjoy the downfall people, it's always great to see those tyrannous mighties fall.

114. There's an easier way to deal with the problem
Article II, Section 1, Clause 6:

In Case of the Removal of the President from Office, or of his Death, Resignation, or Inability to discharge the Powers and Duties of the said Office, (See Note 9) the Same shall devolve on the Vice President, and the Congress may by Law provide for the Case of Removal, Death, Resignation or Inability, both of the President and Vice President, declaring what Officer shall then act as President, and such Officer shall act accordingly, until the Disability be removed, or a President shall be elected.

If they can get the guy declared mentally unstable, which shouldn't be hard, the Congress could determine that a mentally-unstable president is Unable to discharge the Powers and Duties of the office of President.

This requires no two-thirds majority in the Senate. No simple majority in the House. Just a declaration that Bush is crazier than a shithouse rat and that such people are incapable of being president.

He has friends ALL OVER DC. Most of the staffers during the Reagan era have stayed on and moved up the ladder...his friends are EVERYWHERE, from the Feebs to Justice to the WH.

I believe him. I do not always agree with him, but I think his reporting is accurate.

They're far from a reliable source, and they beat this same drum at least once a month, with increasing shrillness.

This could certainly be true, but it's more likely that it's made up out of whole cloth by CHB.

93. what are the past crimes of CHB? why the emotional response to their
reporting?

you have to take every news outlet with a grain of salt. every news outlet. you square the reporting with your own experience and other reliable sources.

CHB has been reporting this since june -- but anyone who has paid attention to POT-ass's public behavior could deduce he'd be a real prick in private. nothing inflammatory here.

just seems like the reaction against CHB are our of proportion. so the question is, what has CHB done in the past to illicit this behavior?

I hope he has steady people near him. Yeah they are probably Republicans but I want steady right now. Bush is nothing but a rich kid who never had to face up to a damn thing. I don't like his learning curve to be when he's sitting in the Oval office. The Republican party need to pick candidates better then this next time.

28. Knebel's book doesn't really offer answers.
The fictional president resigns voluntarily in the end, without admitting to a problem. The book does, however, draw attention to this serious issue: what can be done if a president is no longer mentally competent to hold office, and who will take the responsibility of taking appropriate action.

Should it be the president's physician? The vice-president? the president's wife? The speaker of the House? A combination of these or others?

I don't know whether any mechanism was developed for this situation after it was aired in this novel, written in the late 1960s.

68. There's really no satisfactory out though (spoiler)
In the end President Hollenbach is confronted with his own lapses and incresingly frequent episodes of paranoia by people he trusts including a family member. He is still with it enough to see the truth in thier words and to resign, presumably because he is a noble man.

Somehow I doubt Bush's nobility and capacity to reflect on his own behavior will save us or that half the cabinet and the twins are gonna stage an intervention.

Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 07:35 PM by pinto
Thompson takes a string of mainstream quotes and ties them together with an unamed source - the lead in - to make a piece. A lot of internet outlets do this, it's part of the landscape. I don't take him for an investigative journalist for a minute, but he captures a sense of a thing real well.

33. Newsweek: Bush "puffy"-eyed, "cranky", "fidgety", "baleful", "resentful"
Edited on Wed Sep-28-05 09:30 PM by StefanX
We take it with a grain of salt when Capitol Hill Blue says it.

But this week's Newsweek is also saying it now.

So I think it's true. Bush is losing it. Doesn't sound like "the kind of guy you'd want to have a beer with."

http://msnbc.msn.com/id/9470154/site/newsweek/

The president didn't look all that relieved or happy, however. His eyes were puffy from lack of sleep (he had been awakened all through the night with bulletins), and he seemed cranky and fidgety. A group of reporters and photographers had been summoned by White House handlers to capture a photo op of the commander in chief at his post. Bush stared at them balefully. He rocked back and forth in his chair, furiously at times, asked no questions and took no notes. It almost seemed as though he resented having to strike a pose for the press.
...
Warm and hearty in public, Bush can be cold and snappish in private, and aides sometimes cringe before the displeasure of the president of the United States...

article was Newsweek quotes as well. So it's solid. I think Newsweek is on the very verge of writing something on Bush's boozing.

Puffy eyes from lack of sleep? This from the guy who was sound asleep at 10:00 pm on 9/11? Newsweek knows damn well it's booze. It just comes down to who is going to have the guts to write about it.

35. When will Bush have a melt-down on live TV?
That's what I want to know. Sooner or later it's bound to happen, especially if things keep trending down, down, down for him.

The only question is what kind of melt-down it will be. Will he have a nervous breakdown and begin crying head in hands at the podium of a press conference? Will he give the finger to the TV camera and shout "F... all of you!" and begin throwing things at the press corps? Will he attack and punch out a member of the press, a smallish one who can't hit back like Helen Thomas? Or will he just go nuts and begin laughing and drooling and jumping up and down shouting "Look at me, I'm cuckoo bananas, I'm cuckoo bananas!" ...?

Any ideas on what form it will take?

"I run this country and I could have all of you put in prison or executed if I wanted to. I'm the king - er president and you better remember that before you start to bad mouth me".

At which point he begins to giggle uncontrollably and three staff members rush out with a robe that they throw over his shoulders and escort him off the stage as he sobs "I'm sorry I let ya down mommy". ...come close during one of the '04 debates when Charlie Gibson tried to stop him from speaking out of turn and Dubya simply wouldn't yield. Gibson let it go, but had he been insistent on Dubya's compliance (which, as moderator, was within his purview) I think we might have seen a meltdown of sorts. Dubya had the electronic ear piece device to receive immediate instruction to calm him, but even with that he looked about to go over the edge to me.

That's just too sad about Bush, ya know ...

:nopity:

First we had to watch this ill-willed moron and his band of criminals buy his way into the presidency of our country. Then we had to watch as they hurt the weakest, the old, the ill, the poor, the homeless, women, children, the dark skinned, the non-rich. We had to watch the middle class subsidize the rich till they were exploding with money. We had to sacrifice our poor and middle class young guys so the corporate rich could buy pieces of Iraq for almost nothing. Then we had to watch as his corrupt administration and his empty brain caused thousands to die in the aftermath of a hurricane that could have been avoided if they weren't so busy taking our tax money and giving it to the rich instead of reinforcing dams with it. What an ugly thing. Now we'll have to watch his equally ugly downfall and I pray he takes his band of criminal down with him. Now exceuse me while I go get my popcorn..

Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 12:37 AM by Nothing Without Hope
haven't already. It compares Bush's speaking ability 10 years ago with what it is today. You'll be amazed to see him speaking smoothly and confidently WITHOUT NOTES as governor of Texas. These days he can barely make a coherent sentence and often doesn't manage it.

Presenile dementia is not a specific disease but a description of a progressive neurological deterioration with a typical set of symptoms. A full diagnostic workup would be far more specific - but as long as they need their puppet, they won't allow that.

http://www.adbuzz.com/bushbuzz.htm

Actually, as he continues to deteriorate and to become more unstable, he is becoming a liability to the neocons. I am actually sort of expecting them to arrange his tragic "assassination," by the "enemy" du jour of course. They would have their "excuse" to bomb the country of their choice - Iran, most likely - and Bush would instantly become a fallen hero and all his lies, evil, and horrible policies would become subjects not to be spoken of.

I actually don't expect him to be allowed to become much more of a liability that he already is. They'll make use of him one way or another. Horrible, but it seems to make a sickening kind of "sense" as a potential neocon strategy in light of everything they've done before. Bush's own private 9/11 attack - it would make Cheney president and solve a LOT of GOP problems.

82. Yes, it does make sense. And you should check out HAGFISH as GOP mascots:
Weasels have a certain elegance and they are warm-blooded mammals. Even lampreys are not totally horrible. I think a hagfish would be a better mascot. You should check them out - they are just about the most repulsive vertebrate animal I've ever read about. In fact, they are so primitive that they are not closely related to real fishes at all. They are alien compared even to lampreys. They are covered with amazing amounts of slime, and the way they eat the bodies of their dead and dying prey is gruesome and repellent. (They have no jaws, and you could say they really get into their work and tie themselves up in knots.) They are basically of not much use to anyone, so far as I can tell, except probably to some specific co-evolved parasites, to researchers in vertebrate evolution, to biochemists studying their amazing slime, and to Koreans, who eat them (after the slime has been removed).

Hagfish are MUCH worse than lampreys, it seems to me, and the slime and several other features make them ideal neocon mascots. They eat not only dead, rotting prey, but they attack helpless netted or hooked fish as well. Their voracious greed is legendary.

http://www.jyi.org/volumes/volume5/issue7/features/lee.html
(snip)

The natural foods of hagfish include worms and benthic infauna (creatures that live within seafloor sediments) or epifauna (creatures that live upon the sea floor), but hagfish are more infamous as voracious scavengers. Preferring the soft, inner flesh of dead and decaying marine life, hagfish can actually burrow into an organism's body and devour it from the inside out, resulting in the pulsating appearance of the dead body.

"Hagfish should be called ‘fish' with the knowledge that they are only distantly related to the world's fishes," says Dr. Steven Webster, senior marine biologist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium in California and 24-year veteran of invertebrate zoology. According to Dr. Webster, hagfish are "an ancient group that branched off from the chordate line probably before the vertebrate column appeared in the tree of life." Webster appreciates hagfish for their evolutionary and taxonomic heritages. As members of the class Agnatha and order Cyclostomata, they are one of a handful of jawless fishes with odd sucker-shaped mouths. Agnathids such as lampreys and hagfish appear quite worm-like, but they are actually scaleless, chordate fish (embryologically related to vertebrates and others in the phylum Chordata). The hagfish at the Monterey Bay Aquarium reside in the "Mysteries of the Deep" exhibit, where they lie happily curled on the bottom next to a fake fish carcass.

Hagfish have yet another curious feature: They produce a viscous white slime. While lampreys do not have slime glands, hagfish have 75 to 100 glands from head to cloaca, with ducts that release thick globs of exudate when the hagfish is disturbed. Hagfish slime, being thick and sticky, is known to be extremely unfriendly to the touch and can appear shockingly suddenly. Moreover, seawater enhances the viscosity and thickness of the slime. It is said that when you have one bucket of angry hagfish, you will soon need another bucket for the overflowing slime.

116. You absolutely MUST see this web page. And you're right, hagfish slime
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 09:56 PM by Nothing Without Hope
can be used as an egg white substitute in scones.

Here's the must-see web page, with many fine hagfish links and portraits:
http://idiocentrism.com/squib.hagfish2.htm
Title of the page: "Oregon's Gross New Economy"

Caption: It is hard to capture the dramatic qualities of the hagfish in a simple sketch

And here is the scone recipe - with my thanks to you because it would NEVER have occurred to me to look for such a thing:

http://oceanlink.island.net/oinfo/hagfish/hagfishathome.html
Hagfish at Home

Being the curious and ... interesting... students that we are, we began to ponder the potential uses of this incredible substance. One of the uses that we came up with was using the slime as an egg substitute in baking, as the composition of the slime is mainly protein and water.

To test this theory, we decided to try a cooking experiment comparing scones made with ordinary chicken eggs to scones made with hagfish slime.

To start, we prepared a basic scone mix and created two seperate portions with everything included except the eggs and slime. Then, we mixed the hagfish slime (about one egg's worth) into one of the portions of the scone mix, using our hands, and we did the same with the egg and the other portion of scone mix. The egg and the slime did not have enough moisture on their own, so we added some water to each of the mixtures. We rolled both portions into balls measuring about 3.5 cm in diameter, slightly less than the size of the palms of our hands. We placed them on an ungreased pan and put them in the oven at 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) for about ten minutes, then we checked on them. They weren't done, so we left them in for another 2.5 minutes, at which point they were finished. Of the two people immediately asked which scone was made with which, they each correctly guessed which ones were made with slime. We theorized that this could be attributed to the fact that the hagfish scones were kneaded more and had more water in them. We also offered a scone to Mike, a Marine Station employee, and he decided that "it was great" and that "it was not icky at all." He also mentioned that he "could feel the slime pumping through his veins" and that he felt "rejuvenated". Personally, none of us could taste a negative difference, and in fact we agreed that the ones made with hagfish slime tasted better!!

By the way, you know those "eelskin" billfolds that are so prized? They're made of hagfish skin. Maybe this is not the flawlessly perfect GOP mascot after all: they do have some use to sufficiently imaginative humans. They can be eaten, they can be turned into billfolds, and their slime can be used to bake scones.

Couldn't say that about Tom Delay or Bill Frist...

Seventy percent of my bets go to his answering a question, forced to form an impromptu thought, forced again to voice it, his synapses misfiring on camera, nothing but odd bubbles and weird sounds emerging from his mighty, toothless mouth..

Then, trying to save the day, someone gently prompts him along, as would any well-mannered person who can't bear to see another human being embarrass himself...

Then Bush explodes at the person, visiting an angry tirade upon him or her. Lets loose with finally distinguishable words to the tune of, "shitfuckfreedomcuntassbagstaythecoursebitchmommy!". I figure by that time, someone will have a hook ready to drag him offstage.

I don't think he wants the hassle of being President anymore. It's way more work than he's ever done in his life and if Rove, Cheney and Scooter get indicted he may just say F-it! If those indictments happen it will be hard to argue that Bush wasn't in on the Plame outing and if the Democrats win a majority in 06 which is likely if such indictments do come down, he might be impeached anyway. It would make sense for him to resign.

Someone help me out here. Of any given 40 people, how many are likely to be insane? We can fairly well consider Raygun's Alzheimer as one case. Maybe even throw in Jackson's genocide and Grant possibly being alcoholic. I'm guessing that still leaves plenty of statistical room for * to be mad as a hatter, just by numbers. 117. Thanks for posting...
Funny thing was, I knew this would be a CHB link purely from your post title. We've seen a variation of this story from them several times over the last few months.

126. I love these "bush is crackin up" threads
Seriously its much more fun reading articles from CHB than reading yet another item about how FEMA fucked up, Iraq going down the shitter, congress guts endangered Species Act etc. In fact the only thing that even approaches it on the satisfaction scale is the Delay desperate denial tour now playing on TV.
