I'm dying for a Diet Coke, and nothing else will do...
and there is none in the house, and the nearest grocery store is 4 miles away, and that's too dangerous to walk or bicycle at this time of night... I can afford the gasoline to make the trip in my CRV, but I want to honor Bush's request to curb non-essential trips.

On the other hand, I'm feeling right now that Diet Coke is very essential.

So, I'm a bit confused. Do I go by what he thinks is essential or by what I think is essential? Or maybe by what DUers think is essential? Should I go get my Diet Coke?

It isn't chock full of aspartame, after all.

7. It all depends on how much you value your
nervous system.

They hide it in the foods you eat. It is now in over 50,000 products. They used to be required to put 'Diet' or 'Sugar-Free' on the label; but now if it is used in conjunction with another sweetener, that is no longer the case. You know the product of which I speak - it is aspartame, NutraSweet, Equal, or whatever it is called this week. Aspartame breaks down in beverages in temperatures over 86 degrees Fahrenheit, into aspartic acid, an excitotoxin and formaldehyde, a deadly neurotoxin. This in fact occurred in the Gulf War, as pallets of Diet Coke were left sitting for days in the hot desert sun, and the temperatures reached 125 degrees Fahrenheit. I know, I was there.

And when you are thirsty, you drink whatever is handy. Now I am a 100% disabled Gulf War Veteran. Do I blame aspartame? Partly but not all. But I'll tell you what it does now if I happen it grab one of those 50,000 products and don't read the label (or perhaps they've slipped it into something new)....It triggers Migraine attacks that last as long as 4 days and causes the rhuematoid arthritis that it gave me in the first place to act up. This is a very informative book. If you care at ALL about your health and what you might be eating, this is a MUST READ!!!

15. Another review.... a great book.
Once again.... Ronald Dumbsfeld putting Americans first..... right behind money, power and ego. Pissant.

>>I am a convert....Further I just don't have any neurons to spare at my age. You've got to die from something, but I'd prefer to die of something less exotic..eg shot by a jealous husband. Seriously, getting off aspartame completely stopped my tinnitus and dizziness.

The most interesting story is how Donald Rumsfeld (yes the same guy)
pushed nutra sweet thru the FDA against all opinions within the FDA.
It was approved just days after Reagan took office...<<

>>"Excitotoxins" should be mandatory reading for all medical students, allopathic and naturopathic alike. Disturbing in its implications, this book is an unbiased overview of data ignored by the FDA and the health consequences the American public faces. The book explains in easy to understand detail what happens to our brains when we consume foods laced with MSG or Aspartame. Fortunately, several possible remedies under research are also identified.

The undeniable connection between chronic excitotoxin ingestion and neurological disorders such as Parkinson's, ALS, and Alzheimer's disease is backed by years of scientific documentation. The author shows how the FDA relies heavily on flawed, biased studies, purchased by powerful corporations, to justify poisoning the American public. These industries, slowly disabling and dementing us and our children, pocket billions of dollars at our expense - easily buying them scientists and scientific data to "prove" their safety.

They even lobbied, and won, the ability to utilize these poisons hidden in foods under disguised names (truth in labeling?). Our best interest is not at the FDA.
Protect yourself! Consume processed (boxed, frozen, canned) foods, spices and drinks at your own risk. Read this book!<<

19. The thing about the migraines is very true.
I used to drink Diet Coke all day at work. Around mid-day, I would come down with the worst migraine. I had one that literally lasted 6 days. I spent two of those days at home in bed.

Went to the doctor and asked about something to help with the migraines. When she looked at my nutritional profile sheet (where you also list everything you've consumed in the past 48 hours), she said give up the diet soda.

I did and I haven't had a migraine in almost 3 years.

20. Now consider the inverse of this.... there are dietary supplements
out there right now.... that quite literally have MIRACULOUS properties... just google for glyconutrients and some affliction and see if something doesn't turn up that will absolutely blow you away.... milk thistle for liver, coenzyme q10 for heart, enzymes for poor digestion, Sam-E for joint pain and mood.... and on and on and on....

www.lef.org will take you where you need to go.

That, along with some B-12 and grandma's old standby, cod liver oil, have (FORTUNATELY!) helped to keep my medical expenses down this year.

The number TWO reason why the government should be teaching the public about the myriad benefits of certain select supplements... AND THEY WON'T.... but they will go after anyone who does attempt to reveal the truth about them.

This moring on CNN they are blah blahing about PAD.... peripheral artery disease.... I say get a clue.

An open study to assess the safety and efficacy of Aesculus hippocastanum tablets (Aesculaforce 50mg) in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency.

Dickson S, Gallagher J, McIntyre L, Suter A, Tan J.

Bioforce (UK) Ltd., 2 Brewster Place, Irvine, KA11 5 DD, Scotland, UK. sylvia@bioforce.co.uk

An open study was carried out to assess, primarily, the safety and tolerability of Aesculus hippocastanum in the treatment of CVI. Patients underwent 8 consecutive weeks of treatment and were asked to take one 50 mg Aesculus hippocastanum tablet, twice daily. In total, 91 adverse events were reported, of which only 4 were rated as probably related to the study drug. Patients judged the tolerability of the study medication in the majority of the cases at visits 2 and 3 (90 and 95%, respectively) to be "good" or "fairly good." Only 2 patients rated tolerability as poor at visit 3. For each of the symptoms investigated the difference in the median value between baseline and visit 3 was found to be statistically significant and both the ankle and lower leg circumference decreased. The PPG measurements were rejected after analysis since validation measurements carried out after the trial showed that the PPG technique had an internal error of around 30%. Nevertheless, the majority of patients rated efficacy to be "very good" or "good," with only 10 patients reporting no effect by the end of the study. The results of this study indicate that Aesculaforce 50 mg tablets are a safe, well-tolerated and efficacious treatment for Widmer stage I and II CVI.

Comparative study of Venostasin and Pycnogenol in chronic venous insufficiency.

Koch R.

Wolfsschlucht 6a, 34117 Kassel, Germany.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of Venostasin (horse chestnut seed extract) and Pycnogenol (French maritime pine bark extract) in the treatment of chronic venous insufficiency (CVI). In an open, controlled comparative study 40 patients with diagnosed CVI were treated either with 600 mg chestnut seed extract per day or 360 mg Pycnogenol per day over a period of 4 weeks. The following parameters were investigated before the start of treatment and after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment: circumference of the lower legs and rating of subjective symptoms (scores) of pain, cramps, night-time swelling, feeling of "heaviness", and reddening of the skin. In addition, blood levels of cholesterol LDL and HDL were determined before and at the end of treatment. Pycnogenol significantly reduced the circumference of the lower limbs and significantly improved subjective symptoms. Furthermore, Pycnogenol significantly decreased cholesterol and LDL values in the blood, whereas HDL remained unaffected. Venostasin only moderately but not significantly, reduced the circumference of the lower limbs and marginally improved symptoms. Venostasin had no influence on the determined lipid values. Both medications were equally well tolerated. In conclusion, Pycnogenol was found to be more efficacious than Venostasin for the treatment of CVI. Copyright 2002 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

I'm hooked.

I'd risk the walk, and get an almond Snickers to make it worth the risk of life and limb.

I'm getting 25 mpg city, 27 on the highway. Thinking about giving away my old 16 mpg 4Runner to a Katrina victim.

Don't forget to turn your gas cap at least 3 hard clicks or you're going to get that "Check Engine" light annoyance.
