3. Only a GED?
or say a GED and THEN a college degree?

If the former, no one I can think of right away.

11. Yup, and that's my point I have several kids who just want to drop out...
I'm telling them not to do that...... If High school's not working for them..... our school system has a night GED program.....
And they can still go to college.

22. Curious
I'm not really sure how it works, so I'll ask. Can a kid drop out of high school and obtain their GED sooner than they would have if they had graduated traditionally? Do they just take a test, or are they required to attend x amount of classes?

25. My son and I had that precise conversation!!!!
He was proposed dropping out so that he could acquire his GED and start college years earlier!!! He could easily earn a GED (very bright guy) and could by-pass the bore of high school. He was the one who proposed such a possibility to me. I'd never thought of it, myself.

However, he is enjoying the social activities of high school too much to go the alternative GED route. *LOL*

27. We have a program in which they can earn their GED as quickly....
as they can get a high enough score on the pretest..... then they take the test..... if they pass. Then they can go apply to community college..... then transfer to a four year university..... or some kind of trade school.
One of the kids from last year's crop who went to beauty school. She and her mom have opened a salon...... pretty cool.

23. the GED doesn't accomplish much of anything, depending on what they
wish to do to earn a living. Even without a GED you can still take classes in community colleges; having a basic diploma without college doesn't do you a lick of good. You can even audit classes at some universities without a HS diploma if the urge to learn is that strong.

Most critical is what the kids are intending to do to earn a living. If they're entreprenuerial and can manage on their own, running their own businesses, they'll be fine as was I.

What's important is that they self-educate, and have the tools to do so.

29. Right on liberalitch
I had a friend who did his dissertation on gifted and talented kids. In his research he found that 2/3 of the kids who dropped out in the California school system had scored high enough on standardized tests they'd taken in 1st grade to place them in gifted programs.

It's the smart kids who drop out. School bores many of them and they often have a difficult time fitting in with other kids. Trust me, I know. I have a GED too! :hi:
