NPR - ABU GHRAIB PHOTOS ORDERED RELEASED
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 12:31 PM by DistressedAmerican
I just heard the story on NPR while driving around. I have looked and can not find any links yet. They were very sparse on details.

Basically they said:

"A federal judge had ruled that the pentagon must release additional photos of the abuse at Aub Ghraib despite pentagon claims that release of the material could lead to more violence against American troops." That is pretty close to word for word.

There was no detail about a time frame or whether all of the material has been ordered released. Also no word on whether the vids are also included in the ruling.

Does anyone have more info?

NEW YORK - Saying the United States "does not surrender to blackmail," a judge ruled Thursday that pictures of detainee abuse at
Iraq's
Abu Ghraib prison must be released over government claims that they could damage America's image.

U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein ordered the release of certain pictures in a 50-page decision that said terrorists in Iraq and
Afghanistan have proven they "do not need pretexts for their barbarism."

Judge orders release of Abu Ghraib photos

Thursday, September 29, 2005; Posted: 1:16 p.m. EDT (17:16 GMT)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Pictures of detainee abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison must be released despite government claims that they could damage America's image, a judge ruled Thursday.

U.S. District Judge Alvin K. Hellerstein ordered the release of certain pictures, saying terrorists in Iraq and Afghanistan have proven they "do not need pretexts for their barbarism."

The American Civil Liberties Union sought the release of 87 photographs and four videotapes as part of an October 2003 lawsuit demanding information on the treatment of detainees in U.S. custody and the transfer of prisoners to countries known to use torture.

The ACLU contends that prisoner abuse is systemic.

happened at Abu Ghraib. Finally. I wonder...can the Pentagon appeal this lastest ruling?

edited to say that my above question is really dumb. The Pentagon will do whatever they can to avoid releasing these photos/videos.

i have to say that i am very uneasy about these coming out right now. there is no doubt that if the photos are even half as bad as Seymore Hersh has indicated, there will be hell to pay...

9. It IS Not The Photos That Are The Problem. Ongoing Torture Is.
We must make sure that these abuses stop. This is an important step.

Additionally, if they do come out, now, with the majority of nation opposed to the war, it could work to end the war sooner, thereby saving lives.

What an outrage and they have no real interest in persuing it even when their arguement is that the release of such photos puts lives at risk. Hypocrites!

discussions because of my husband being in the military. You know how sensitive I am about this whole entire situation, but this stuff just blows my mind. I think they may be trying to keep this really quiet because it's so egregious! I think someone with huge computer storage should try to keep some of this stuff because it may disappear.

I'm totally against the exploitation, but I think EVERYONE should know this shit is going on.
