"Someone like Thomas?"
The American Bar did not endorse him, did not give him a qualified endorsement, the way it did to others.

So Bush wants a justice who would "find" a pubic hair in his coke, who would change religion, affiliation, wife and if he could, the color of his skin, and who would not be found the bit qualified by those who know.

Come to think about it, this would be the person with whom Bush would feel most comfortable to be around.

1. Bush is an idiot. Do we expect any thing better of him?

2. What do you base the following on:
"and if he could, the color of his skin"

3. Only on his behavior
He changed his religion to that of whites - Episcopalian. He married a white, Conservative woman and, I believe, is his second wife. He benefited from affirmative action but now rejects it. So it seems that the only thing he cannot change to distance himself from his upbringing is the color of his skin.

4. And a bunch of Dems will vote to confirm
just like they did with Thomas.

Since there's effectively no opposition party, Bush would be a fool not to appoint the most extreme (or even unqualified) person he can find.

5. Oh, I hope that their vote on Roberts is not an indication
of their next vote.

Roberts replaced another RW, so it was not worth the fight. And, at least, he is considered well qualified.

The next one, however, will require more scrutiny. So I think it was good for the Democrats to save their ammunition for the next fight. At least they appear responsible.
