Oct. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Taiwan authorities are issuing land and sea alerts for Supertyphoon Longwang, which is approaching with winds gusting up to 227 kilometers per hour. The storm is threatening the island's eastern, central and northern areas.

The typhoon is expected to exert its biggest influence over Taiwan tomorrow, with the Central Weather Bureau warning on its Web site of possible floods and landslides.

The center of Longwang, named after the god of rain in Chinese mythology, was about 570 kilometers (356 miles) east- southeast of the northeastern Taiwan city of Hualien at 8 a.m. local time today, the bureau said.

Longwang, the 19th-named storm of the Western Pacific typhoon season, is heading west-northwest at about 25 kph, the bureau said.

11. Probably, but it's very rare...

However, a hurricane in Arizona might actually be somewhat of a blessing now. AZ had its first successful monsoon in nearly a decade this year; they really could use the rain. By the time Otis reaches Arizona, it'll have been over land enough to weaken quite a bit.

It's pretty much following the same path that monsoon winds/rains do.

Edit: I should amend my comments regarding the "successful" monsoon...it was very scattered as usual, but was far better than the last few failed ones. Its "success" depends on who you ask, I guess, my family in AZ reported that it was a lot better, and I saw a thunderstorm or three myself when I was down there in July.:)

I'm just having a little fun with ya; I always tease my family about this when I visit;) On a more serious note, southern AZ would almost certainly be in for some flash flooding and such, but I would think that it would weaken to a tropical storm by the time the center reaches the AZ/Mexico border.

Even then, it'd (hopefully) be halfway between Yuma and Tucson, aka in the middle of nowhere.

In a sense, you're right; I don't even want to think about if it's still a hurricane in the middle of a desert...

Otis is taking a path very close to the Baja coast, where a narrow tongue of warm water will enable it to maintain hurricane intensity at a much further north point than most East Pacific hurricanes are able to. A hurricane watch has been issued for much of the Baja Peninsula, and this will be upgraded to a hurricane warning on Saturday. Otis is expected to cross the Baja Peninsula Sunday, and quickly weaken to a tropical storm as it moves up the Gulf of California towards Arizona. By Monday, the remains of Otis should cause 3 - 5 inches of rain to fall over southern Arizona, creating flash flooding problems.
