grounded by WHAT-AM
By Michael Klein
INQUIRER STAFF WRITER
Al Franken and Randi Rhodes are getting the boot from Philadelphia airwaves, as WHAT-AM (1340) is pulling off programming from Air America, the liberal talk-radio network.
Friday will be the last day, and a new WHAT lineup will begin Monday, said general manager Kernie Anderson, adding that "things were not working out" with Air America after about a year.
WHAT aired Air America's programming from noon to 7 p.m. weekdays, sandwiched between the rest of its lineup. The juxtaposition of liberal talk and WHAT's African America-targeted talk programming seemed an odd fit from the start.
Ratings were abysmal.
Air America, heard on about 70 stations nationwide, also is streamed on XM satellite radio and carried at www.airamericaradio.com.
An Air America spokesman said: "While we hate to lose affiliates, it is very common to add and drop affiliates due to local market conditions. While we hate to lose WHAT-AM, we are currently in negotiations with another station and hope to make that announcement soon."

in those soft Red States that we been coming up short by a nose for 6 years. I like Dean but the Dean side of the party will only get us more heartache in 06 and 08. I want to win by any means necessary. And If that means moving a little to the center........... so be it.

And what the hell is appealing about Carper? He sold the working class out with that bankruptcy "reform" bill?
The DLC has to decide what it stands for. As far as I can see, it stands for soliciting corporate funds and in doing so, selling out the interests of ordinary Americans.

|
Edited on Sun Oct-02-05 12:00 AM by Dr_eldritch
Honestly, I'm closer to the 'center' than most Democrats could ever be.
Know why?
I'm an honest-to-God Republican.
The 'center' right now is me ferChrist'ssake.
If my party weren't the party of absolute recklessness that it has become lately, then I sure the hell wouldn't be here.
Even Clinton had more real 'Republican' values than these neo-conservative fascists ever could. So your so called 'center' is the equivalent of Mussolini's coffee table, and anyone who says otherwise can personally bite my ass.
Not on the left side, not on the right side... but RIGHT in the middle!

Posted on Thu, Sep. 29, 2005 Air America Radio grounded by WHAT-AM

WHAT, which bills itself as the voice of Philadelphia's African American community, will add a 1-to-5 p.m. call-in show from Philadelphia Daily News columnist Elmer Smith. Mary Mason will continue from 6 to 9 a.m. Her producer, Albert Butler, will get his own show from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Thera Martin-Connelly will host from 5 to 7 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays; Tavis Smiley's syndicated show will air from 5 to 7 p.m. Fridays. The syndicated Bev Smith will do 7 to 10 p.m. weekdays, followed by Reggie Bryant from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.

15. The really odd thing that jumped out at me |
|
Was the line "The juxtaposition of liberal talk and WHAT's African America-targeted talk programming seemed an odd fit from the start."
What is so weird about liberal talk and African-American targeted talk programming? Most African-Americans like myself are progressive or left-of-center, so that doesn't seem an odd fit at all.

eventhough I'm white.
They don't seem incompatible to me. Unless the station as a whole wants to have more of a local, community focus.

26. Here's what that meant. |
|
They want to turn it into a station that panders to the YOUNG hip-hop and rap group. Years around clubs, DJs, and managers help me understand this kind of thing. Listen, and tell me if the programming doesn't get more MTVish. AAR is too "heavy" and "complicated" for their target audience. Quite a possible underhanded racist slap too. But of course I could be wrong.

35. If that's what they are saying, that's indeed racist |
|
Because then they are saying that young African-Americans don't "do nuance."
Well, I'm a 33 year old African-American female, and I most definitely do nuance. Not every issue is Black and White. And I'm so thankful for Air America Radio, because that is where I get the overwhelming majority of my information from.

24. Well, this is a surprise for me |
|
I had no idea. Oh, well. They only had Al and Randi. Maybe a new affiliate will carry more AAR programs, maybe even a couple other liberal hosts not on AAR. The other programming, the local hosts and such, it sounded hokey and boring IMO. And the signal wasn't the greatest. AAR can do better than that.

36. I'm actually glad... The coverage in Philly was awful |
|
I live about a half hour outside of Philly, first it was impossible to get any kind of reception in the Philly suburbs. If my car was facing the right direction and the sun was out (I'm not kidding) I could hear what was being said although it had terrible static. If I was passing power lines, a house with a microwave on, or it was dark outside I received no signal.
Also, like the article said they only played Al and Randi's shows no repeats at night and no weekend coverage. I hope that they find another radio station in the Philly area with a stronger signal strength and a willingness to broadcast ALL of Air America's shows. It could be a good opportunity.
