Miller and Her Stand Draw Strong Reactions

In the end, what did Judith Miller accomplish by spending 85 days in an Alexandria jail?

Not much, say her detractors, noting that the deal the New York Times reporter ultimately made to testify about her confidential source in the Valerie Plame leak investigation was similar to agreements reached by Time magazine's Matthew Cooper and other journalists in the murky case.

Some of Miller's colleagues at the Times, who declined to be identified because they are challenging their bosses' stance, say much of the staff is frustrated and confused.

"People are angry," one staffer said. "Was this a charade on her part for martyrdom, or a real principle? She wanted to resurrect herself from the WMD thing," the staffer said, a reference to Miller stories about Iraq possessing weapons of mass destruction that turned out to be wrong.

"I am truly depressed," another staffer said. "It absolutely makes no sense. Basically she did the same thing Matt Cooper did, with the intervening weeks in jail. But I just don't buy that she's doing it for her own image enhancement."

2. When she was first jailed I said she was playing the martyr...

she thought she was doing this 'noble' thing by going to jail and even had a fucking smile on her face on the way.

It was never real to begin with. If she really believed she was doing such a noble thing, she would have stayed in jail like Susan McDougal did. Susan refused to lie and spent three years, I think it was.

This so-called reporter couldn't get past three months. If she was so goddamn rightous, she would have stayed and kept her mouth shut.

3. Big Time.

She's part of the story and part of the cabal that brought this country to war. Remember that story where she actually saw the evildoers' WMDs and spoke to an umnamed source who assured us all that she was watching pure evil in that sandy, hot desert?

Charade is charitable. Lying tool of criminals is more like it.

4. In the grand scheme of things

Ms. Miller's attorneys certainly talked to her in great depth and detail about exactly what she had and how it would play out. Consequently, one has to wonder whether they were negotiating her own immunity or whether the strategy was to let her take the jail time in order to make sure the story came as close to the end of the GJ term as possible to focus attention on her story, rather than Cooper's and to see if there were more details that would turn up in order to flesh out the story in a more spectacular way.
It certainly looks as though the wait and see strategy worked from the standpoint that the B*shies are in deep doo-doo on many fronts. The big weakness to the whole thing is that it is unlikely that anyone is going to say that Plame was id'd by name, rather than by relationship to Wilson.
