You HAVE to be joking. Has there been no other news in the past 48 hours that deserves to be covered? I'm pissed, email them now. Please link the address someone, I'm too pissed.

1. Friday is usually a "soft news" day at Nightline |
|
It wasn't always that way.
Please excuse. I'm lamenting the slow death of what was once America's gold standard for TV journalism.

2. Sorry..I think it's a worthy discussion. |
|
Remember when the Reagan administration classified catsup as a vegetable in order to avoid spending money on school lunches?
The shit that gets slopped onto lunchroom trays across this country is ridiculous.
Any discussion that exposes that dirty secret is worthy, in my opinion.

how many kids wait on line about 15 mins. for their lunch and then have five minutes left to eat it. See this thread... lots of good discussion... http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=159&topic_id=4223&mesg_id=4223

but look at the news being reported in the past 48 hours. Miller, libbey, Delay and more. This is current and this IS the news. Bush in free fall and a systematic pattern of lies unfolding. And these fuckers want to talk about school lunch? It is an issue, but it is not the issue of the day.

11. Good post, Badger1 -- ABC did a 4-5 minute story on this on WorldNews |
|
Seems to have simply been a promo for Nightline.
I'm sure GMA will spend substantial time on this topic on Monday.
ABCnews hits the trifecta! Three stories in one.
Stockholders cheer.

but school lunches are very important. Not only do they need to be nutritious, but also affordable. For the most part they are, but in this economy it gets tougher and tougher.
When we lived in Idaho, the high school had soda machines, candy machines, a pizza hut and a subway. That was next to the lunch room which served complete slop for food. Now how does this help kids?
At least here in TN it's a little better. There is only one candy machine and two soda machines. The food is a little better, too.
This goes to the health of our kids and I think it's important.

8. Back in the mid to late 50's |
|
The poor kids were required to report for lunch duty at 11:30 a.m to the lunch room. They were the poor kids who couldn't pay for their own lunches so they were required to serve the rest of us lunch and be fed in return.
That was the time I became democrat. These kids were the poorly dressed, those who couldn't go on field trips because they didn't have the quarter required for the bus charge. They were the slow readers and slow learners.
The girls in the program kept their eyes downcast as they served us who could pay lunch. I was heartsick for them.
The GOP said they should take pride in the fact they helped earn their own lunch. I left the lunch program. I was so sickened.
Can you imagine W serving lunches? Cold day in Hell. He's just learning the poor exist. By the way, all these disadvantaged kids were white.

9. How long did this practice last? |
|
I remember kids when I was in grade school that helped serve lunch. This was in the early 70's. I never thought anything of it or why they would be there.
It's very tragic and wrong. It's like making the kids pay for their parents being poor. :(

13. I think LBJ stopped the practice |
|
I remember it well. It made no sense to me that the poor, dressed shabbily with learning disabilities, should serve our meals because they were poor. I also emotionally cringed that this same group wore 2nd hand and misfitted clothes and missed field trips. You could tell the inflicted mental pain on them. I flet so badly, but didn't know what to do.

back in the 50s. In high school during the 60s, they would let you do the same thing if you couldn't afford a lunch token.
When I was playing high school football, we had this kid who came from a family even poorer than mine. Three hours before each game, we would have steaks. Before our first game in 1963, this kid ate his first steak. He was 15 years-old.
I met a kid in Army basic training (1970) who sent half of his $100.00 monthly pay back to his parents. They needed the money to pay for coal to heat their shack. This kid ended up loving the Army because, as he told me, it was the first time in his life that he had three good meals a day and enough money to buy shaving cream.

10. This is what is wrong with dems |
|
You have the lying bastards on the ropes, demise is inevitable, and you don't take advantage. You miss an opportunity given to you in gold and you let them switch the discussion to a touchy feely , feel good direction. You are sooooooo missing the opportunity and they are dictating your response. Wake the fuck up. The time is now and you are letting them take charge of the discussion. Wake the fuck up. The time is now and the window of opportunity will soon be closed, they are cunning and smart. In the mean time we will be discussing the rational of the school lunch program and not the big issues and scandals of the day.

Since when does anyone have to be on one issue and one issue only?
School lunches are important. Maybe not to you, but they are to many people.
Don't dismiss anyone because school lunches may be a little higher on some people's list and at the bottom of yours.

Don't even go there. And don't tell me about school lunch. How many kids have you put through public schools? I know that it is important and relevant but you can't tell me this is the issue of the week! Just go ahead and drink the network koolaid and ignore the fact that we have them on the ropes and you are unable to finish them off. You are the problem. You don't even realize hat they are taking controll of a bad situation and you have been recruited to spin their side. Wake up and git out of the way if you can't lend a hand.

Take a break. Drink some coffee or take a hit - whatever you need.
Scooter, deLAY, Fist, Rove.... they're all going to be there on Monday.
People who watch NL on a regular basis know that Friday is different. Maybe it's old fashioned, but so is grilling the ever-loving SHIT out of the presidentially appointed head of FEMA.
Ted helped cut Brownies nuts and Bush's nuts by proxy. I for one PRAY that TK remains as long as possible, we need him.

I have remained loyal ever since and try not to miss it if I can help it. Tonight couldn't be helped.
TK is a top notch reporter and when he goes, NL will not be the same. I do hope the same quality of journalistic integrity we've enjoyed, for the most part, remains after he retires.
Hopefully, ABC doesn't give it the ax either. :evilfrown:

It's the reason I became a democrat. I couldn't stand the elitism, that the poor children must serve the rich children food. We all have defining moments of what we believe in. I never bought into that the poor should serve the rich, especially at lunch programs in grade schools.

School lunches are very important. It's our kids. I will never forget poor kids required to serve lunch to rich kids. That is pivotal. Can you even imagine the ego damage done to these kids? I can, I saw it.

19. It's worth talking about. Progressive thinking demands investment in the |

future. You will find your economic future in todays grammar school.
Obesity and disease is spreading with the Standard American Diet of meat, meat products, animal products and animal by-products accompanied by a bit of fried starch with a bunch of salt on everything. This is washed down with a large high fructose corn syrup sweetened carbonated beverage that contains more sugar than most people should have in one day.
The typical school meal is entirely represented by the above.
This will cost us all BILLIONS in unnecessary health care costs long term. YES, I care.

also had weight problems. There were no food stamp programs then, nothing. They ate the cheapest possible substinance foods, rice, beans, hamburger, etc.
