CNN Breaking: Explosions in tourist areas of Bali
Edited on Sat Oct-01-05 08:31 AM by highplainsdem
The first near a hotel -- the local journalist reporting says there were a number of casualties. The hotel is the Four Seasons at Jimbaran Bay.

Second explosion about 10 minutes later, at a department store; there were more casualties. The local journalist on the phone to CNN says the store was also very popular with tourists.

The two explosion sites are 5-10 kilometers apart, according to that journalist.

1. Even though I am firmly not a conspiracy guy...
I find it interesting that Bush was beating the drum about "Terra" so much this week.

Tourists Hurt in Explosions on Indonesia's Bali

Politics: 1 October 2005, Saturday.

There are reports that at least three Western tourists have been injured in at least one blast on Indonesia's resort island of Bali.

Local television and radio stations reported there were as many as four near-simultaneous explosions near tourist areas on Bali.

El Shinta radio reported that at least three blasts rocked Jimbaran beach, which is lined with seafood restaurants commonly frequented by tourists. The radio quoted witnesses saying they saw at least three bleeding people leaving the scene.

Another explosion struck downtown Kuta, about 28 km away, the radio station said.

In 2003, suspected militants from the Jemaah Islamiyah militant group attacked the J.W. Marriott hotel in Jakarta, killing twelve people.

The same group was blamed in an explosion outside the Australian Embassy in the same year that killed ten, as well as the 2002 bombings on Bali island that killed 202 people, 88 of them Australians.

3. The journlist the CNN anchor was talking to mentioned the restaurants,
too, but he also mentioned the hotel by name. Don't know how close the hotel is to those restaurants.

4. Kuta is a huge party town, full of Aussies and people
from all over. If a substantial bomb went off, you can bet the injuries and casualties rise. This is the same town that was terrorized in October 2003.

5. The BBC report
suggested that they are casualties. This was dinner time on a popular beach strip.
Thank Bush, Blair and Howard for their success re winning the war on terra. Everyone now hates them and innocent citizens are now victims, just like the Iraqis who die by the hundreds every week.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- Several explosions occurred almost simultaneously Saturday in tourist areas of the Indonesian resort island Bali, killing at least two people and injuring many others, police and Indonesian media reported. Foreigners were among the victims, witnesses said.

''I helped lift up the bodies, there was blood everywhere,'' I Wayan Kresna, a witness, told El Shinta radio station, adding that at least two people were dead. ''Many people have been brought to the hospital.''

Kresna said he witnessed the explosion at a seafood restaurant on Jimbaran beach, which is frequented by foreign tourists.

Another near-simultaneous explosion hit a shopping center in downtown Kuta, about 18 miles away.

7. Reuters story on ABC's website:
http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=1175532

This one mentions that one of the explosions on Jimbaran beach was near the Four Seasons Hotel, as the journalist on CNN reported earlier. Still some confusion on whether there were two explosions on the beach, or one. One explosion in Kuta.
