Need help: Question about satellite radio |
|
I am thinking about getting the XM satellite radio system because the AAR station in my area comes out of FT Lauderdale/North Miami. I can't pick it up at night or any time before 7:00 A.M. in the morning.
At work I used to stream AAR on my computer but I have a new job and can't do that in my new department. We have so much electronic & computer stuff and wireless gadgets etc. in the building that I cannot get the signal of any AM station in the office much less one 60+ miles away.
So to my question: IF I get the Satellite Radio will I be able to hear it in my office?

Unless you have immediate access to a window directed to the satellite.

2. I have Sirius satellite radio. |
|
It depends on if you can feed the antenna out or near a window to a spot where the satellite feed is not blocked. I can't get it in our bedroom, even hanging the antenna out a window. We'd have to run the antenna through the roof. In our living room, we can pick it up in the boombox by running the antenna out the front door due to get past the front porch and oak trees.
So I would say it depends on what kind of access you have to the outdoors at your office.

3. I am in an interior office on the 3rd floor of a 5 story building. |
|
No access to a window at this time. So it doesn't look like to good of an idea to invest in this.

5. I have Sirius and can get it in my Baltimore Rowhouse |
|
Look I am no technical whiz so I put it on top of my DVD player, it's a boombox and conected the antenna to my rabbit ears from my TV set, works fine.

4. There's two ways to listen to satellite inside |
|
1. There's the radio hook up for your stereo. We have one at work, but then again, we're in a building full of windows. And they also have the boom boxes.
2. Stream it off of XM.com
I don't know how well the boom boxes work, because I've never used one. I would think that as long as you're not in a basement/dungeon it would work.

6. You can't get AAR through XM.com's stream. |
|
They only stream their own in-house channels. Various legal reasons. They don't really have any of their other talk channels online either.

We just listen to music stations at work (a lot of disco).
I have it in my car too. I love XM, I hardly ever listen to the regular radio anymore.

7. Look Into Wireless Internet... |
|
Good chance you could be near a place to tap into wireless internet radio. There's a new generation of radios...Linksys makes several...that look like radios, sound just as good as satellite...and operate off the local wi-fi networks. If you have a nearby access point (like a Starbucks or McDonalds or Hotel) you're good to go.
Some areas have wide area networks operating or going in. I've held back on investing all the money in XM or Sirius...waiting for the wave of Wi-Fi radios that are streaming out.

http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?childpagename=US%2FLayout&packedargs=c%3DL_Product_C2%26cid%3D1115416831192&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapperHere's the a link to the Linksys Media Link system I use. I listen to AAR on various affiliates on this thing as well as the direct network feed. Also some cellphone dealers are now offering live streaming on their next generation phones that can also pick up Internet audio streams. It's a quiet but very interesting revolution going on. Cheers...
