11. Authoritarian Personality Disorder. See this article on * and the RW
from the Guardian:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1033904,00.html

So George, how do you feel about your mom and dad?

Psychologist Oliver James analyses the behaviour of the American president

Tuesday September 2, 2003
The Guardian

<snipping out some wonderful analysis of why * is so messed up because of his family, but I encourage you to read it>

The outcome of this childhood was what psychologists call an authoritarian personality. Authoritarianism was identified shortly after the second world war as part of research to discover the causes of fascism. As the name suggests, authoritarians impose the strictest possible discipline on themselves and others - the sort of regime found in today's White House, where prayers precede daily business, appointments are scheduled in five-minute blocks, women's skirts must be below the knee and Bush rises at 5.45am, invariably fitting in a 21-minute, three-mile jog before lunch.

Authoritarian personalities are organised around rabid hostility to "legitimate" targets, often ones nominated by their parents' prejudices. Intensely moralistic, they direct it towards despised social groups. As people, they avoid introspection or loving displays, preferring toughness and cynicism. They regard others with suspicion, attributing ulterior motives to the most innocent behaviour. They are liable to be superstitious. All these traits have been described in Bush many times, by friends or colleagues.

<snip>

The commonest targets of authoritarians have been Jews, blacks and homosexuals. Bush is anti-abortion and his fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible would mean that gay practices are evil. But perhaps the group he reserves his strongest contempt for are those who have adopted the values of the 60s. He says he loathes "people who felt guilty about their lot in life because others were suffering".

<snip>

Most fundamentalist Christians have authoritarian personalities. Two core beliefs separate fundamentalists from mere evangelists ("happy-clappy" Christians) or the mainstream Presbyterians among whom Bush first learned religion every Sunday with his parents: fundamentalists take the Bible absolutely literally as the word of God and believe that human history will come to an end in the near future, preceded by a terrible, apocaplytic battle on Earth between the forces of good and evil, which only the righteous shall survive. According to Frum when Bush talks of an "axis of evil" he is identifying his enemies as literally satanic, possessed by the devil. Whether he specifically sees the battle with Iraq and other "evil" nations as being part of the end-time, the apocalypse preceding the day of judgment, is not known. Nor is it known whether Tony Blair shares these particular religious ideas.

34. He's Methodist - "officially" - now...
"Bush was raised in mainline Presbyterian and Episcopal churches. He began attending United Methodist churches after his marriage to Laura, a life-long Methodist. He officially became a member at 35 when his twin daughters were baptized. But he says as he approached 40, he realized something was missing. "

19. Sociopath

Profile of a Sociopath

A number of mind-manipulating cult leaders may exhibit many of the behavioral characteristics of a sociopath--an outstanding ability to charm and seduce followers. Since they appear apparently normal, they are not easily recognizable as deviant or disturbed. Although only a trained professional can make a diagnosis, it is important to be able to recognize the personality type in order to avoid further abuse. These traits also apply to a one-on-one cultic relationship.

23. Antisocial Personality Disorder
Consider their rabid antipathy to anything called "SOCIALism." If there's anything that's common on the right it's an unreasoning phobic reaction to anything even remotely associated with socialism. Almost schizophrenically, however, 'society' is elevated to some god-like status.

One of the most common comments I've heard from people in the 'red' areas of this country when speaking about some nearby city is "there're too many people there."

"Too many people."

Now, let me ask you, does any sane person complain about "too much" of anything they love? When we go to a buffet, do we complain of "too much food"? When we enjoy the forest, do we complain of "too many trees"? When we enjoy the ocean, do we complain of "too much water"? When I complain of "too much snow," it's not because I LIKE snow; it's because I DISLIKE snow.

These people are anti-socialism = anti-social = anti-people.

Sociopaths.

the NYC subway or the LA freeways at rush hour, say.

But there is a difference between wanting your space and believing that "there is no such thing as society," in the words of good ol' Maggie Thatcher.

28. psychopathy co morbid with narcissism
lack of conscience
lack of understanding of consequences
shallow or one dimensional emotions
inability to perceive emotions in others (lacking emotions themselves they are unable to recognize them in others unless as tool to control or manipulate)
remorseless
will play on your sympathy/pity/prejudices
highly manipulative to advance their agenda, and simply for sport
pathological liars
high sense of risk taking
can be charming when engaging in predatory behavior
PREDATORS
financially/sexually/emotionally irresponsible
exploitive
overinflated sense of self importance

This is a partial list from several experts, including Dr. Robert Hare and Martha Stout.
Martha Stout recently wrote a book called "The Sociopath Next Door" and she mentions political leaders (rather pointedly....to my surprise)
in the book:
several of the ways to protect yourself from a sociopath:
Question authority
Never engage in the game
in a question between your instincts and the role the person (or group) has assumed, go with your instincts
redefine your concept of respect
Do not give your pity lightly
Do not try to redeem the unredeemable!

She also mentions the use of 'patriotism' to control and manipulate.

just my 2 cents

30. B. Narcissism F. Mixtures
I am not speaking about moderate Republicans. I am speaking of the fanatical far right leaders like Delay, Frist, Dobson and Tony Perkins.

Especially after reading about how Dr. Dobson BEAT HIS DOG and then wrote about it in a book on child rearing! And then couple that with a prevailing and complete lack of empathy towards homosexuals, their love of the death penalty and war and a belief that every other person except they that subscribe to their, (fanatical religious right) beliefs are going to die in Hell and their ability to LIVE ON THIS EARTH AND BE OK WITH THAT BELIEF makes me certain that these people have no empathy for others. I do not fault young children or those who have been indoctrinated at an early age finding it hard to remove themselves from these beliefs. I believed it at one time. But I can truly say that I was never at peace with this type of religious belief. It is a very harsh way of viewing the world. I can barely stand seeing people (or any other beings) suffer on this earth now. To believe it happening to someone for eternity would be too much for my head to handle. I think I would explode.

Yet these people flaunt it. They flaunt their belief that other people are heading toward a torture chamber. They even torture certain groups in this world by making them "untouchable",(like gays, transgendered and bi-sexuals).

They flaunt their belief that they are heading towards a Heaven that is closed to all other groups except theirs. They find each other in crowds by wearing crosses or other symbols of their elite group and then they clique together as if they have something that no one else has. (I even heard a woman tell me that years ago. I was young and at some "salvation" type of meeting and I was crying because some people were in the back laughing and cutting up. I told a woman next to me and she said: "Remember Honey, we have something that they don't"). These people will only go to "Christian counselors", “Christian doctors” and “Christian Schools” and some of them put their "Christian" logos on their business as if to tell the others that "they" are a better quality business because of their religious beliefs. If this is a group that thinks the rest of world needs to be “saved” in order to not be tortured for eternity I would think they would spread themselves out so as to try and save more people. But they do not. Sure their organizations do their share of recruiting but by and large this is a much closed group.

They are also far more concerned with form rather than substance. I heard someone at the pro-war rally speaking of the "language" people were using at the Peace Rally as if a word is more important than a bomb. I find it very easy to pick these people out on news shows. The men rarely have facial hair and the women almost always wear dresses and never show cleavage. Everything is supposed to present a “pure” like presence as per their definition of what “pure” would look like.

What is Narcissism?

A pattern of traits and behaviors which signify infatuation and obsession with one's self to the exclusion of all others and the egotistic and ruthless pursuit of one's gratification, dominance and ambition.

Most narcissists (75%) are men.

The text in italics IS based on "Malignant Self Love - Narcissism Revisited", fourth, revised, printing (2003)

An all-pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration or adulation and lack of empathy, usually beginning by early adulthood and present in various contexts. Five (or more) of the following criteria must be met:

*

Feels grandiose and self-important (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents to the point of lying, demands to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)

*

Is obsessed with fantasies of unlimited success, fame, fearsome power or omnipotence, unequalled brilliance (the cerebral narcissist), bodily beauty or sexual performance (the somatic narcissist), or ideal, everlasting, all-conquering love or passion

*

Firmly convinced that he or she is unique and, being special, can only be understood by, should only be treated by, or associate with, other special or unique, or high-status people (or institutions)

*

Requires excessive admiration, adulation, attention and affirmation - or, failing that, wishes to be feared and to be notorious (narcissistic supply)

*

Feels entitled. Expects unreasonable or special and favorable priority treatment. Demands automatic and full compliance with his or her expectations

*

Is "interpersonally exploitative", i.e., uses others to achieve his or her own ends

*

Devoid of empathy. Is unable or unwilling to identify with or acknowledge the feelings and needs of others

*

Constantly envious of others or believes that they feel the same about him or her

*

Arrogant, haughty behaviours or attitudes coupled with rage when frustrated, contradicted, or confronted

People need to recognize the prevalence and danger of these predatory individuals, who can function as admired and powerful members of society, as long as they fly below the radar legally.
They have NO empathy, they do not FEEL normal emotions. It is ALL about MOI.

40. Where do sociopaths fall in this lineup? I think they are sociopaths
They have no conscience, they freely and openly commit crimes and generally seem to think they are above the law.

Also, they have this projection disorder, they call others the things they are themselves. Like calling Kerry a coward when Bush is the biggest coward ever...you get the point.
