Bush * Approval At 40% In New Newsweek Poll
I think he's down to his base.....

40% love him....40% loathe him.... And the final 20% are up for grabs .....

3. I don't think he has hit the floor yet
but from here on out it gets harder to chip away at that number. There are still things Bush is doing that worry his base: his tolerance for illegal immigration, his runaway federal spending, his apparent failure to privatize Social Security.

4. Where Do They Go If Bush Isn't "Right" Enough For Them...
I think the base for either major party at the national level is around 40%.....

You can go back to 64 and not find a major candidate doing much worse...

5. They go home is where they go

Casting a ballot for someone is qualitatively different than saying you approve or disapprove of their job performance.

Just because a right winger says he disapproves does not mean that he will then be on our team. He may stay home in 2008, or vote 3rd party or quietly vote the Republican ticket, but without much enthusiasm, and without any active campaigning for the party ticket.

George H.W. Bush went down to 29% in 1992, Carter and Reagan also dropped into the 20's. Of all the Ted Kennedy supporters in 1980, most came back to Carter, but with little enthusiasm, some stayed home and a few voted for John Anderson.

9. Not if 20% are undecided.
20% rock-bottom base sounds about right.

7. Don't you think this is because there's a ban on Body bag pics
in NOLA, just like the effect of the Iraq body bag photo ban?
