Miers dated "radical right" supreme court judge... but.....
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 10:28 AM by flowomo
This article metions that Miers dated Nathan Hecht:
http://www.law.com/jsp/article.jsp?id=1102944936042

(snip) "She's not a back-slapper. She's very businesslike," says Texas Supreme Court Justice Nathan Hecht, who has dated Miers over the years and has known her since he first became a lawyer at Locke Purnell in 1975.

"She's also very kind. She always remembers everybody's birthday, and has a present for them. She'll be finding a present for somebody in the middle of the night," he says. "'Can't it wait until next week?' 'No,' she'd say, 'It has to be done now.'" (end snip)

Hecht is scary: http://www.texasobserver.org/showArticle.asp?ArticleID=678

(snip) "Now comes Bush nominee Priscilla Owen, who–with fellow Justice Nathan Hecht–currently occupies the radical right wing of the conservative Texas Supreme Court.... While all nine Texas Supreme Court justices remain pro-business conservatives, Justices Owen and Hecht (who inspired the opposition PAC "Hecht No!") were reduced to an isolated bloc of extremist dissent in 1998, following the appointment of several relatively moderate justices by none other than then-Governor George W. Bush. Bush’s appointments–combined with a "60 Minutes" exposé of the court’s campaign finance conflicts–brought a noticeable dose of restraint to the rest of the court. But Justices Owen and Hecht continued to masquerade as "strict constructionists".... (end snip)

****

Interesting littl side note there about Bush's "relatively moderate" Texas Supreme Court appointments.

4. ah -
I missed that entirely - but

I dunno .... who are they and what have they done?

Did he do it "on purpose" or in spite of himself? Didn't he used to be more moderate himself - before he descended so far into lunacy and started believing his own religious rhetoric.

19. The key phrase is "relatively moderate"
All Bush's appointees were conservatives. It's just that some of them weren't quite so rabidly right-wing as Owen and Hecht. One of these "relatively moderate" judges was Alberto Gonzales, years before his memos facilitating torture helped convince Bush he should be Attorney General. According to a report from People for the American Way:

In fact, many of Owen’s dissents reveal a judicial philosophy directly contrary to President Bush’s asserted goal of nominating judges who will interpret the law, not make it. As explained by the Texas Supreme Court majority, a number of the dissents that Owen has written or joined would have effectively rewritten or disregarded the law, usually to the detriment of ordinary citizens. In one case, Owen’s extreme views even led current White House Counsel Alberto Gonzales, then her colleague on the Texas Supreme Court, to charge her and her fellow dissenters with “an unconscionable act of judicial activism.” In another case, Gonzales’ majority opinion called a dissent by Owen an attempt to “judicially amend” a Texas statute.

6. It makes me feel so much better knowing she is kind.

I understand, though, she still eats meat, unlike Adolf Hitler who became a vegetarian because he couldn't stand the thought of animals suffering.

I guess she still has a way to go to catch up with The Fuhrer when it comes to kindness; but then so does our unelected leader, the most brilliant man she has ever known. Brilliant, I guess, but not particularly kind. It's all so confusing.

14. I'd feel better knowing she was a raging asshole and not so
much a politcal lackey, haven been given a seat on our highest court as a slap-er-on-the-back payback for her starry-eyed fealty.

You're right, it is so confusing.

16. Hitler's Vegetarianism
From Snopes.com: "Hitler's diet was primarily vegetarian throughout the latter part of his life; however, he didn't adopt a vegetarian diet for moral reasons, but because he suffered from gastric problems."

I'm so fucking sick of you carnivores swiftboating us veggies.

17. Carnivore? I've been a vegetarian since 1968. Can you match
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 11:59 AM by Benhurst
that?

And, by the way, whatever motivations Hitler had, my switchover to vegetarianism was based on animal rights, although I've come to believe it is a healthier way way to live.

So watch who you're calling a carnivore, partner. Them's fightin' words this part of the country. :hi:

10. Yeah, who would have her? She's older and a successful
lawyer, and therefore she's not dating material.

That's just for young chicks with no ambition.

8. "Middle of the Night" means they sleep together

She's also very kind. She always remembers everybody's birthday, and has a present for them. She'll be finding a present for somebody in the middle of the night," he says. "'Can't it wait until next week?' 'No,' she'd say, 'It has to be done now.'" (end snip)

12. Maybe she had sex. Did she use contraception? Tsk tsk.
All those potential babies from God, wasted. Tsk tsk. What kind of a moral authority figure is that for the fundies' children?

13. Not sure about her having sex

I can't recall remembering a friends birthday in the middle of the night, in bed, with a real man.

Maybe this person is a paper doll and they just hang out together and have "sleep overs."

Sounds like a carefully worded statement to hide the truth.
