Miers is a sacrificial lamb
A perfect Rove plot. The get the left to spin their wheels trying to stop her. Somewhere down the line some dirt is uncovered and her nomination is withdrawn.
The Left get their victory and the nominee they really want is put up. It's now time to move on and get on with the bussiness of governing.

1. I wonder if that's it
and if that's why Reid came out like he did with supporting her?

3. Absolutely...
We'll get our precious useless victory over Miers then end up with Priscilla or Janice Rogers Brown. Yeah that's the ticket!

4. I've been thinking the exact same thing.

Althouogh no dirt even need be exposed. She is obviously not qualified, has no experience, is being appointed only because she is a croney, and already has people who don't want her on both sides.

5. I hope you're right.
I'm spinning my wheels as fast as I can ... here and at the office, in LTTEs and anywhere I can get people to listen because Meirs is bad. Here's why I think so:

I mean, really. We must fight. The alternative is to let her in, and I'm just not buying the argument that we could do worse. Look at her record. We can not do worse.

end rant :)

7. Sounds like a big risk to take

there's no guarantee the Dems WILL stop her - in fact, it's highly likely they won't.

11. Yeah. I'm seeing little to no outrage from the Left.
On the other hand, Bush has really pissed off his base, it looks like.

They even sent Cheney on Rush's radio show to try to sell her.

10. I disagree, she will get 90+ votes
A sacrificial lamb would have been someone like Owen or Janice Rogers Brown.

Reid has all but announced support for her.

The only thing that will keep the vote under 90 votes is disillusioned Republicans.

13. Bush is only trying to protect himself.

even the thugs wouldn't try to overturn Roe vs Wade. It would be suicide so that said they have to sneak one past the fundies.

12. No. The Bush presidency requires victories.
The premise of the Bush presidency is that there really isn't any legitimate opposition. For a nominee to actually get beat destroys the illusion of competence, the illusion of invulnerability, and puts democrats in a new light.

Bushies don't put up ANYTHING to lose. They won't even veto a bill. Why? Because a veto is an admission that something came out of congress against the will of God/Bush.

15. exactly right
For presidents, losing can become contagious. If you're seen as losing, you lose your power over people. Chimpy's folks would never put up a nomination in hopes that it would lose. Particularly not now when the country is beginning to wake up to the fact that these clowns have made us less secure and less prosperous, not more secure and more prosperous as they would claimed during the campaign.

14. That scenario is unlikely.
You give Rove far too much credit. Miers is the candidate. It fits in perfectly with Bush's habit of rewarding positions based more on loyalty than ideology, although we have little or no indication of what Ms. Miers actually believes - which is advantageous for a Supreme Court nominee.
