Poll question: "Lookism At DU"
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 04:48 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
I have noticed alot of posts denigrading the appearance of our opponents mostly when they are female .... This is puerile and counterproductive... It is as immature as when the Freepazoids make collages by cherrypicking "unattractive" Democratic females and "attractive" Republican females and then act as if they are making a point...

Any knucklehead can cherrypick "hotties" from both parties or females that are not...

Enough of it.... Let's judge folks by the quality of their ideas and not their appearance....

As an aside the reason I put "hotties" , "attractrive", and "unattractive" in quotation marks is because they are subjective judgments and when it comes to governing essentially superfluous...

1. You are, unfortunately, quite correct....
I've noticed it around here a lot, but at least there are only a few main instigators and the majority of us don't "go there".

3. It's Silly And Mean..
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 04:52 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
I can sit in a bar and make judegements of what females I think are "hot" or not as they walk in but I usually keep these judgements to myself even when I'm with other guys...

Even when my judgments are positive I refrain... I'm not a big fan of objectifying people...

5. i think her appearance might help her
i haven't really seen her on tv but from the pics she looks unthreatening. she doesn't seem to come across as the mean spirited right wing extremist and doesn't seem to have the assholish thing you see in people like Bush, Cheney, Brown, Coulter etc.

she "looks" like a nice person from the pics i have seen and that could help her with the public. of course that could also be why she was nominated. Roberts seemed to have the same thing. while we made fun of his physical appearance he still failed to come across as the right wingers i name in the above paragraph. someone who looks like Bork would be easier to paint as a right wing extremist.

but we will have to wait and see more. i look more forward to this than i did the Roberts hearings.

7. I'm No "Cherry"
And of course I'm capable of commenting on a woman's looks....

Yeah, everybody can "make themselves look better".... The "big hair" was unflattering to Ms. Miers and she ditched it for a more layered look... She looks ok to me.... And if you are going to force me to make these judgments she doesn't have a "mean" face like Cruella (Katherine Harris)....

As for Bush, Cheney, Coulter, etcetera is it their repugnant ideas which make us criticize their visage or the other way around...

18. I read your orig' post too quickly
and spouted on at a tangent. The gist of it was that I get absolutely f%cked off with people being judged on the basis of appearance. Appearance is largely irrelevant and typical of the intolerance towards anything that is "different"; behaviour one expects from intolerant people...but you know that anyway.

regards

10. I do think that comments on the looks of candidates
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 04:56 AM by Lindsay
are irrelevant and childish.

However, as she is not a candidate for any office and she can afford pretty much anything, including consultants, I reserve the right to criticize Mrs. Il Douche's wardrobe. ;)

on edit: too early and too little coffee to catch my spelling error on the first try

People refer to scrubbos chimplike features, so it does cut both ways.

13. No more calling Rush Limbaugh fat, or Bush simian
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 06:24 AM by jpgray
When people dislike someone, any defects, real or imagined, in appearance usually are a popular target. Nobody calls Ted Kennedy a fat fuck here, but he is objectively about as fat as Limbaugh, for example. In other words, the appearance isn't the cause of the dislike, the appearance is a target for it. Anyway, when I find a person ugly in appearance or otherwise, I reserve the right to express that opinion.

14. So
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 07:43 AM by DemocratSinceBirth
Is it appropriate for folks ar right wing boards to criticize the appearance of posters here who post their pictures?

I really don't see how that behavior is productive...

Folks have all the right to all kinds of things but that doesn't make it right...

16. "fat" can be a subjective thing
100 pound anorexic supermodels think they're fat but I don't think it's out of line to compare Bush's face with a memeber of the animal kingdom when obvious photographic evidence can be demonstrated.

19. You need a third choice
How about "People should stop being busybodies and stop worrying about comments people make on a bulletin board"

Or how about "Who gives a damn?" I like the way that it's an either/or proposition. So When I vote in your poll I'm fer ya or agin' ya. Sorry, my young padawan, but only the Sith deal in absolutes.

"Lookism" pfffftttt!!!! give me a friggin' break

Yet another PC campaign to tell people what they can and cannot say, coming from the thin skinned. Seems to happen here every once in awhile, as well as boards I've frequented over the years.

Sorry this crap really rubs me the wrong way, as do control freaks.

20. Should be called "Lookism in Humanity"
Because people are not perfect, and sometimes they make inappropriate jokes.

Has nothing to do with political party. That is just human nature.

23. oh please.
Grow a thick skin.

Politics is a full contact sport: wear a cup.

In the time it took to type this, a couple of infants in the Horn of Africa died from diarrhea that could have been prevented in them and the thousands to come with a clean water well that would have cost $100 bucks to drill.

sheesh.

We basically do not care what you look like here unlike the above mentioned networks where you can not even get hired unless you are model quality :)
