One Month in New Orleans... A Letter From Michael Moore
by email

10/4/05

Friends,

My staff has been down in New Orleans and on the Gulf Coast for nearly a month now setting up and running our own relief effort with Veterans for Peace. The overwhelming response from so many of you has directly affected the lives of thousands of people. Here's what we've been able to do with your help:

** Over 500 tons of food, water, clothing, medical supplies, baby products, feminine hygiene products, cleaning supplies, power tools, and a boat and trailer for reaching those still flooded by water have been distributed directly to those in need

** Over 10,000 aid packages have been sent by you via UPS and FedEx to our camp and distributed

** Over two million dollars in donations, food, water, and supplies have been sent and distributed

** Tractor trailers, dozens of 20 foot trucks, six school buses, and other vehicles arrived loaded with supplies. Most stayed on to help distribute donations

** Over 200 chainsaws, 100 generators and 2,000 gallons of bleach have been distributed

** Over 100 people were walked through the FEMA application process

** Doctors, Physician's Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Psychologists, Registered Nurses, LPNs, Paramedics, Emergency Medical Technicians, and Social Workers have volunteered from across the country and joined forces to create several mobile medical units providing prescription medication, first aid supplies, diabetic testing equipment, insulin and tetanus shots for those digging through the rubble of their homes

** 14 people were reunited with their families

But beyond all these statistics are the personal testimonies of what my staff has witnessed. Electricity was provided to a family whose young son suffers from Cystic Fibrosis, allowing him to continue his treatment until electricity in his neighborhood was restored. A 60 year old woman on a respirator was found, still in her home despite a gaping hole in the roof. We patched the roof and gave her food and water. Supplies were delivered to the Houma Indians, who had received no help (not even a visit) from the Red Cross or FEMA. A roof was put on their Cultural Center in Golden Meadows and a generator was provided to keep a years supply of seafood from spoiling in the sun. A man in Lefitte was found sitting on his porch, the house surrounded by four feet of water. A canoe-load of supplies was paddled to his doorstep by two of our volunteers. New Orleans evacuees joined our efforts. They served as our guides, leading us through now decimated communities and taking us to the areas of greatest need.

You can read more of these in the diaries on my website.

The harsh truth that I must report to you is that the federal government and Red Cross relief efforts are still a disorganized, embarrassing mess with little or no help reaching most people -- this more than a month after Katrina. It is the freelance guerilla efforts like ours that are getting through. We aren't waiting for approval and we aren't stopping. We will make sure Bush and Co. pay for their failure later, but right now hundreds of thousands are homeless, hungry and in need of medical attention. And the rest of us have a responsibility to help them.

We have joined forces with Saving Our Selves Katrina (S.O.S.), an organization that began as a temporary coalition of pre-existing community organizations. They are doing amazing work with volunteers and believe that concrete aid from community church-based organizations must fill the gaps when the government fails us. They have become, with your help, a bright light offering immediate relief to the families who have lost everything.

Find out what SOS and other similar relief groups need, right now, from you.

Thanks again, everyone, for lending a hand. We won't give up and we know you won't either.

Yours,

Michael Moore

When one reads a post and does not give it a response, it sinks. It's very elementary.

It does not require much enegy to add a few words.

The big man from Michigan thanks you for the kick.

The first reply, 6.5 hours later, was a :kick: at Oct-04-05 03:38 PM.

Subsequent replies rescued it from the memory hole.

This can be used as example of what the admins are saying as a "good" post (as witnessed by the subsequent nominations) getting lost and sinking in the fast-moving GEN forum.

See "Where we want to take Democratic Underground"

I look forward to implementation of changes the admins have in mind.

10. Michael, thanks for all you and your folks are doing. I'm printing
the list now so I can search my house for what I can send. I took in two abused teenages 2 years ago and bought them a ton of stuff. They've since moved on and left alot of it here, practically brand new. I'll pack up everything I have and send it. Sorry that I don't have actual dollars to donate. The shipping alone will be an effort, but one well worth it.

An aside, where in the hell is the Red Cross with the over ONE BILLION $'S everyone donated? Why aren't they providing some of this badly need stuff?

14. Time to refloat the TV Nation Navy
When yupscale Greenwich, Conn. passed a residents-only policy at its beaches -- clearly aimed at neighboring, far more diverse Stamford -- Moore rented a few boats in Stamford Harbor, chrsitened them the "TV Nation Navy", and carried out an amphibious landing on the Greenwich beaches.

Time for the TV Nation Navy to carry mucvh-needed supplies to La., I say.

He has more integrity in his fingernail than all the idiots at BushCo have ever had in their whole lives ("nothin' from nothin' leaves nothin'").

I will be sending a large shipment from my CafePress proceeds to this organization, because they're getting the job done.

21. People can say what they want about Moore but...
...if we had a REAL news media instead of just mouthpieces for the rightwing (owned by the rightwing and their corprats), we wouldn't *need* the likes of Michael Moore filling in the details of what they DON'T report. He fills a vast need there. And, once again in New Orleans - he fills another vast need that the GOP-run government cannot fill - that of coordinating and providing aid in times of national disaster. THAT is something taxpayers expect their government to be able to do. But this particular regime is so inept, that it can't, and so arrogant that it won't. So folks can bitch about Moore if they want. At least HE is doing something. And he's getting aid to those people. Something FEMA either could not, or refused to do.

He's doing the job our "news" media won't, and he's doing the job our "government" will not and/or cannot because they're so beset by cronyism, greed, classism, racism, sexism, and horribly bad management.

So, kudos to Michael Moore. If our "news" media and our government were DOING THEIR JOBS, we wouldn't need him.

If people don't like Michael Moore, then they should bitch to (and do something about) the corprat-owned and controlled media and the GOP-run guvmint.

Because THOSE ENTITIES and their miserable failures at doing their jobs are the reason Moore is so successful - and the reason his services are so NECESSARY.

Goddess bless the man...

24. The unfortunate side effect of this
It has been the charge of the right that government does not work. They have done their worst to prove this correct. And now here is an example of people coming together without the aid of the government along side the government falling all over themself.

Of course we look at it and realise that things are the way they are because the right has evicorated the governmental systems in place. It never had a chance with these monsters at the helm. But this will come back from the right as an example of them being right.

38. with luck, some of Bush's supporters will see this ...
Decent people who gave up money they couldn't afford, even with his precious tax cuts, will see how much greater the need was ... and start asking questions. I hope. Though I see your point, about how we end up being reluctant enablers of Bush's agenda.

29. When people physically pitch in and help by
donating their own time and money, I think it shows where their loyalties really lay. And I think that this shows that MM and the people who are helping him and the others who are involved in SOS are genuine in their concern for others. The White House administration & FEMA have shown that they do not care about the American people, black or white.

I hope that he will capture everything on film; it has the makings of another "Fahrenheit 9-11". Let the chips fall where they may.

I've been impressed with my dealings with the Red Cross, however. If there's a problem in New Orleans in regard to the Red Cross, maybe it's due to circumstances beyond their control?

53. My SIL visited a few weeks ago said the same thing--forget Red Cross
the local churches are doing it themselves.

She is fundamentalist, does the speaking in tongues thing, but she's not nuts---she thought turdweasel was the anti-christ right from the start. It was weird having her here watching Christian TV, though...(ugh). But we had some good discussions and connected about similarities in our very different spiritual beliefs. She's a good good woman. And I mean that in the real, human way, not the repressed christofascist way.

Thanks for this great post. Clicking now on the link.
