WTF?! NYC says 'act of God' aided in S.I. Ferry crash
City says 'act of God' aided in S.I. Ferry crash

BY ANTHONY M. DESTEFANO
STAFF WRITER

October 4, 2005

City Hall is now claiming that an "act of God" contributed to the Staten Island Ferry crash that took 11 lives and that the municipal transportation system shouldn't be held responsible for the accident, court papers revealed.

That defense is being raised for the first time in the massive litigation involving $3.2 billion in claims stemming from the wreck of the Andrew J. Barberi on Oct. 15, 2003, said attorneys for the victims.

2. It's a different crash

It's the S.I. Ferry a few years ago, where the pilot passed out and the captain was not with him in the cockpit as co-pilot as he was supposed to be, and the ferry crashed into the dock and the lower level was sliced open. People were decapitated. It was horrible.

3. Was that the name of the other boat?
Sad that wearing life jackets aren't mandatory for all recreational boating.

5. Wrong boat. Not the Ethan Allen upstate at Lake George...S.I. Ferry

crash from two years ago. Horrible event.

Staten Island Ferry crash was big news then. Not a recreational craft, but a commuter ferry.

4. Poor God
Republicans blame him for everything that goes wrong instead of taking the blame themselves. Asswipes.

6. Fatigue and drug side effects are now "Acts of God"?
"Richard Smith lost consciousness from the combined effects of fatigue and prescription drugs."

Gimme a break, NYC.

10. Pathetic.
Bordering on criminal. It should be illegal to put forth a defense that not even the defendant and defense team find believable.

7. They need to quit blaming God and say what they really
mean. They mean that this was an occurrence in nature that caused the accidents. Why don't they just say so and then there might not be so many people who are asking why God would do this.

9. Nature had absolutely nothing to do with the SI Ferry crash
The pilot of the ferry passed out from fatigue and side effects of prescription drugs.

You may be thinking of the Lake George thing this past weekend, which also had nothing to do with nature. A wake, inappropriate seating and insufficient crew were to blame there.

11. Is not a wake a force of nature - a wave that can have
either man made causes or natural causes? I was not implying that either incident was connected to natural causes - simply stating what the phrase means.

12. It is as natural as the light from a spotlight. Everything is natural.
But a wake from another boat is created by human activity in nature. Just as a spotlight creates waves of light in the dark a boat hull creates waves as it moves through the water.

13. If this flies, watch Bush try to use it
"I'm sorry . . . God made me drink all that alcohol before I took the helm of the S.I. Ferry. It's God's fault."

"I'm sorry . . . God told me to keep drinking, and it's God's will that I bombed Iraq . . ."
