Clooney's Film: Good Night, and Good Luck: Rolling Stone Review:
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 10:18 AM by cyberpj
Does George Clooney have a box-office death wish? You have to wonder why the star of Ocean's Eleven would risk his standing as a pinup for ka-ching to direct, co-write and co-star in a movie set in the 1950s, shot in black-and-white and focused on a fifty-year-old battle between TV newsman Edward R. Murrow, indelibly played by David Strathairn, and the Commie-hunting Sen. Joseph McCarthy.

Wonder no more. Clooney knows exactly what he's doing: blowing the dust off ancient TV history to expose today's fat, complacent news media as even more ready to bow to networks, sponsors and the White House. As Murrow said in a 1958 speech, which frames Clooney's dynamite film, the powers that be much prefer TV as an instrument to "distract, delude, amuse and insulate." Challenge is a loser's game.

Not in this movie. In ninety-three tight, terrifically exciting minutes, Clooney makes integrity look mighty sexy. With the help of cinematographer Robert Elswit and editor Stephen Mirrione, Clooney turns the CBS newsroom into a hothouse of journalistic risk-taking. It's exhilarating to watch as Murrow decides to use his CBS news show See It Now (it ran from 1951 to 1958) to call McCarthy's bluff. Murrow persuades network boss Bill Paley (Frank Langella is a marvel of scary, seductive command) to hold the sponsors at bay while he and producer Fred Friendly (a subtly forceful Clooney) lay out a battle plan.

3. I almost never go because the theater experience of today sucks. But
I'm taking my Mom for the opening matinee tomorrow. She's been chomping at the bit to see it ever since seeing the first article on it.

Sure hope it shakes things up!

in Jackson Mississippi and I was so proud to see a full house, young and old, black and white. It was an incredibly moving experience and I was proud of my state for once.

Clooney's movie will be our next.

Clooney vows to keep quiet about politics
04/10/2005 - 13:54:23

Ocean's Eleven star George Clooney is urging his fellow Hollywood stars to keep quiet when it comes to politics, because he fears celebrity endorsements could wreck their favourite candidates' chances of victory.

Democrat Clooney and a number of screen stars have recently come under attack for voicing their political views.

And the actor, whose father Nick Clooney was recently defeated in his bid to be elected the congressional representative for Kentucky, has now vowed to be a lot more politically low-key.

7. I can't wait!
What a great cast, great story, and I really like David Strathairn, he's a great actor, good looking too. He was exceptional in "Son of the Morning Star", yep, he outshone the actor who played the creepy Custer role.

9. The reviews on this film are looking good so far...
I just checked the "Rotten Tomatoes" website and they have it at a "95% Fresh"!! I only saw one negative review... but the film hasn't been released yet.

10. I'm actually surprised at the short length of this film.
I'm glad he didn't take the 5 hour approach alot of directors would've taken with this material (Anyone see Nixon? Zzzzzzzzzz....)

13. Wow,it sounds fantastic. I saw George Clooney on some talk show
the other night. He was asked if he would ever get into politics? He gave that dreamy smile and said no,not likely because he would have to say, yeah I did that, yeah I was with her..he was so charming, witty and cute.

they even bother to mention it. :eyes: If they DO mention it, it will be to tear it apart, I'm sure.

k & r for melodybe
I'm looking forward to the movie, but I am also saddened by our loss (hopefully temporary) of melodybe.

Thank you for carrying on what was important to her, whether that was your intention or not :)

16. The Most Important Film Since F-9/11
I hope this movie does more to change things than Moore's movie did. I mean so many people went to see F-9/11, & yet Bush was *still* re-elected? Did we even see the same film? Did they really pay attention? Pay attention this time, America!

17. There's a companion site encouraging people to be the media!
I talked about it in this thread.

This is an important movie and we need to help it 'BUZZ' as they say in the industry.
