George Clooney: "I'm going to keep saying 'liberal'...."
"...as loud as I can and as often as I can."

George is unhappy that liberal has become a dirty word, and he's speaking out. I say, if anyone can make the word sexy again, it's Clooney.

After "Good Night, and Good Luck", he also has another film coming out "Syriana", about terrorism. I know someone who saw an early screening of this movie and says it's great.

Go George!

24. Do you mean Dems like Schumer?
Who call fellow Dems "extreme"?
Or Hillary? Or other DLCers?

These people are trying to shed the liberal label faster than a dog with a new flea collar sheds fleas.

If we are going to make the Dem party safe for liberals we're going to have to do something I don't like, fight people in our own party. I do not see any other way. The rhetoric is so engrained in the body politic that half the Dem party has picked up on it. Of course, it originated with decades of Repug rhetoric. There's nothing like letting the opposition party to define your message. I suppose we're gonna have to fight them about that, too.

ass. Maybe the only one, to be able to do so...Surely those two boring demos running against him now are not going to win. I don't care what the polls say...Once the republican money machine starts rolling, the republican owned electronic voting machines and the republican corporate media starts it's attacks, spins and distortions, a year from now Arnold will slip by with 49% and win (they'll be other candidates running besides Regugs & Dems) Democrat Clooney could win hands down, but he won't run, why would he, and take all that shit from the republicans and their media machine?

that's something Dems have screwed up on. They try to ignore attacks or rarely take umbrage, neither of which is very effective.

It's better to make fun of it and call it pathetic, which Clooney could do with style.

38. Phil Angelides is all that you write, unfortunately he's boring...
MILLIONS of people in this state have no allegiance to either party or ideology...millions will vote on celebrity status...that's a fact...I've heard many dumb voters still insist Arnold is the
"Terminator" as if that's real and not just a movie script and charcther...I remember a speech Michael Moore gave and mentioned how the republicans exploit star status and how the democrats should as well.

It's sad and unfortunate that real politicians such as Phil Angelides message will be ignored when the republican machine get rolling, for the flash of celebrity...Rove and the WH will be throwing all the underhand slimly tricks , lies and distortions and attacks, to make sure their golden boy Arnold wins this election.

California and Arnold's future for the republican party is very real and we seen how dirty and the win at all cost the republicans will pursue and they do indeed win and worry about the tactics later, as long as they win...

And it didn't help that the republicans were able to get ELECTED democrat Kevin Shelley to resign as Secretary of State and Arnold APPOINTS a republican in his place, that's who will be counting the votes an appointed republican, who has announced he's in favor of the the republican owned voting machine everywhere in California, the one Democrat Shelley was fighting to keep out.

It's going to take far more than just better idea's, policy and agenda for a democratic politician to beat Arnold and the full weight of the republican machine...

I'm telling you, get ready...If Angelides gets 48% or so and still loses what has that accomplished...the self proclaimed "geek" Angelides will be crushed by the phony Hollywood celebritism that so many voters eat up...unfortunately.

18. From today's IMDB news, re: Clooney & politics (and liberals!)
http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/#1

Clooney Vows To Keep Quiet About Politics

Ocean's Eleven star George Clooney is urging his fellow Hollywood stars to keep quiet when it comes to politics, because he fears celebrity endorsements could wreck their favorite candidates' chances of victory. Democrat Clooney and a number of screen stars have recently come under attack for voicing their political views. And the actor, whose father Nick Clooney was recently defeated in his bid to be elected the congressional representative for Kentucky, has now vowed to be a lot more politically low-key.

He says, "My father ran for congress last year. I couldn't campaign for him and I knew I couldn't, because I'd hurt him. They tried to get me to get on the John Kerry train and I said, 'We'll hurt him. They'll use us as 'liberal'.' Now, I would argue that (throughout) American history, it's pretty hard to find a time when liberals were on the wrong side of an issue. We thought that the conservative view was, 'Witches should be burned at the stake.' Moderate view was: 'Well, just in case,' and the liberal view was, 'There's no such thing as witches.' We thought women should be able to vote and blacks should be allowed to sit at the front of the bus and Vietnam was wrong. We haven't really been on a lot of wrong sides for us to be sort of used as this bad word. But we hurt candidates right now, so we can do fundraisers quietly and make some money. But I think it's dangerous to get up and talk about it."

22. For some odd reason the old Phil Oaks song.. Love Me, I'm A Liberal
just came to mind. My best friend and I back then lovingly called it Love Me, I'm A Liver Pill. Ok, we were 15 at the time ;-)

The song criticized those who categorized themselves as Liberals because they wouldn't really act on injustices and some considered those injustices way too radical for them. I believe this was written in 1967.

BTW... I once walked out of an Ochs concert because I found him very boring, live. His lyrics were good, but his music sounded mostly the same.

Love Me, I'm a Liberal
By Phil Ochs

E A E A
I cried when they shot Medgar Evers
E C#m
Tears ran down my spine
E A E
I cried when they shot Mr. Kennedy
F#7 B7
As though I'd lost a father of mine
E A E
But Malcolm X got what was coming
G#m A
He got what he asked for this time
E C#m A B7 E
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I go to civil rights rallies
And I put down the old D.A.R.
I love Harry and Sidney and Sammy
I hope every colored boy becomes a star
But don't talk about revolution
That's going a little bit too far
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I cheered when Humphrey was chosen
My faith in the system restored
I'm glad the commies were thrown out
Of the A.F.L. C.I.O. board
I love Puerto Ricans and Negros
As long as they don't move next door
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

The people of old Mississippi
Should all hang their heads in shame
I can't understand how their minds work
What's the matter don't they watch Les Crane?
But if you ask me to bus my children
I hope the cops take down your name
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I read New Republic and Nation
I've learned to take every view
You know, I've memorized Lerner and Golden
I feel like I'm almost a Jew
But when it comes to times like korea
There's no one more red, white and blue
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

I vote for the democtratic party
They want the U.N. to be strong
I go to all the Pete Seeger concerts
He sure gets me singing those songs
I'll send all the money you ask for
But don't ask me to come on along
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Once I was young and impulsive
I wore every conceivable pin
Even went to the socialist meetings
Learned all the old union hymns
But I've grown older and wiser
And that's why I'm turning you in
So love me, love me, love me, I'm a liberal

Yeah, that's right, the problem isn't the people creating the problem, the problem is the people who don't "do enough" to correct it according to some songwriter who didn't do much of anything.

This is a disingenuous attack, imho.

33. Yes! Let's take the word "liberal" back.
I think a lot of people, including, but not limited to, freepers and fundies, think "liberal" means the lack of racism and sexist. (I can't think of single words that mean the opposite of racism and sexism; maybe someone else can.) They wouldn't say that, but that's what they think.

Here's one definition of "liberal".

"...if by a liberal they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people- their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, their civil liberties.. if that is what they mean by a "liberal" then I am proud to be a liberal. "

31. to me, Conservative is a DIRTY WORD
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 12:13 PM by hopeisaplace
(because I don't live in the US, I just don't get how anyone could think "conservative" wasn't anything but a dirty word?..I actually go out of my way now to not even use that word in a sentence..that's how much I don't want to be associated with the NEGATIVE connotation it emotes ..IMO.)

I make it clear when the conversation permits, that I would never, and will NEVER want to be called or known as a "conservative". Yes I'm in
Canada..but I still say, "I'm Liberal" all the way.
I tell people that, IMO, being conservative means:
1. Shoving your ideas down people's throats (and not getting impeached for it  )
2. Loving war.
3. Loving death.
4. Being hypocritical.
5. Having sex with corporations while screwing the public.
6. Loving money.
7. Wishing the poor away.
8....and the list can go on.

I have said all these things to people whenever there's an opening in the conversation...and usually there's an opening

39. George Clooney has never shied away from Liberal causes...
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 01:05 PM by Blue Belle
He was one of the first to organize the 9/11 and Tsunami Relief telethons, he was at the G8 summit meeting with Bono and Paul Wolfowitz on Global Poverty, he's even donating a large portion of the profits from his (soon to be) Las Vegas Resort to world poverty. Plus, you got to love a guy who calls Bill O'Reilly out and gets Bill to STFU (because Bill was criticizing the Tsunami telethon efforts, Clooney asked him to participate and, "put his considerable money where his considerable mouth is!"). I am proud to be a long-term Clooney fan. :loveya:

On the flip-side... he puts out an Anti-McCarthy movie and proudly wears the "Liberal" banner... jeez, Ann Coulter's review of "Good Night, and Good Luck" is practically writing its self!
