"The Amurkin Dreem"? Zogby can go Cheney themselves! |
|
Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 11:37 AM by maxsolomon
WTF is the deal with this question from today's Zogby poll?
"Which of the following descriptions best represents your goals in life?
A. I believe the American Dream means material success. It is possible for my family and me, and for most middle class Americans, to achieve.
B. I believe you can achieve the American Dream through spiritual fulfillment rather than material success.
C. I believe the American Dream means material success. It exists, but is more likely to be attained by my children and not by me.
D. I believe I cannot achieve the American Dream, whether material or spiritual, nor can most middle class Americans."
firstly, none of those 4 choices are "goals". they are opinions regarding the "american dream", and don't take into account that DREAMS ARE NOT REAL. the "american dream" is full-on materialist bullshit, trying to spin it to mean "spiritual fufillment" makes it no longer "american". spiritual fufillment is the provenance of every goddam person on the planet, and most of them have a better shot at it than we do! its a lie we tell ourselves to we can feel special, like a BS horatio alger story.
what is "success"? 3 squares & a roof? a hummer limo with a hot tub in it?
what is "spiritual fufillment"? becoming a christ, a buddha, a yogi? or believing that you will be taken up in the rapture?
it is meaningless, pandering, sleepwalking, middlebrow thinking like this that makes me hate freedom. JUST STOP ASKING THIS CRAP, ZOGBY!

3. That was from a few days ago |
|
I answered Not Sure to all the current poll's questions because none of the answers expressed my opinion and there wasn't a None of the Above option.

The one that asked if you'd be leaving the country.
I got a Zogby email this morning for a new poll.

9. I think this is a new poll.... |
|
I took one recently that did not include this (I can't for the life of me remember the focus) and this one this morning.
I thought of this question in this way: I believe that spiritual fulfillment ( and I don't mean spiritual in the sense of any organized religion, believe me) is most important to us as human beans. I have never bought into the material, consumer society. But I can never even feel comfortable spiritutally any more because I have to work so hard to keep a roof over my head.
Yes, it is ill logic to even ask a question this vague but that is where we live today.

10. I took this one today. |
|
I couldn't figure out what they were getting at, so I said "not sure" on a lot of the answers. I don't even know what the "American Dream" means to me, much less anybody else in this country. I thought this was a dumb series of questions.

11. What is "success"? . . . |
|
"Success is peace of mind which is a directt result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to become the best that you are capable of becoming." - John Wooden
What is "spiritual fulfillment"? . . .
"If you love everything, you will perceive the divine mystery in things. Once you perceive it, you will begin to comprehend it better every day. And you will come at last to love the whole world with an all-embracing love." - Fyodor Dostoyevsky
What a foolish belief, to hate freedom because others know not how to appreciate it. Bear ever in mind and expand yourself to Hamlet's admonition, that there's more to heaven and earth than are dreamt of in other men's philosophies.

it was just :sarcasm:
i don't hate freedom. why, freedom is just the best! of course it isn't free, so i must achieve material success to be able to purchase it. :sarcasm:
i have no quarrel with your quotes though. i don't think most americans would consider the first to be "material success". it sounds a lot like "spiritual fufillment".
do you think that "loving everything" is the uniquely "american dream"? i sure don't.
not :sarcasm:

13. I did that one this morning |
|
It was odd to say the least. Since neither one is what I would consider to be the American Dream I chose not sure.
