Ready to see where you stand? Liberal, Anarchist, Left-leaning
Libertarian?

Even if you've taken the Political Compass test before, take it again; you may be surprised at where you've moved.

http://www.politicalcompass.org/

I'll post mine first.

I don't self-describe as a Left-Libertarian, 'cause so many believe we don't exist, but that "political compass" test that came out a couple of years ago plotted me there.

My scores: Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -8.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -7.03

I'm somewhere to the Left of, but more libertarian than, Gandhi.

"The chart also makes clear that, despite popular perceptions, the opposite of fascism is not communism but anarchism (ie liberal socialism), and that the opposite of communism ( i.e. an entirely state-planned economy) is neo-liberalism (i.e. extreme deregulated economy)."

This was inspired by another thread here at GD:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x4971876#4972078

Post results here at this thread, though. :)

Jesus and Gandhi and Dr. King are some of the ones I admire the most. All ended up dead because they "got too far," and people who profit off the existing order don't like that, and they don't like you. (Or me for that matter)

Edited on Tue Oct-04-05 09:03 PM by Selatius
You sound exactly like my best friend. I am, in comparison, more socialist than he is, and I am also more libertarian than he is.

Think of it this way: On one extreme, you have those who believe the state is more important than the individual and that it should make decisions for the people. (The authoritarians) On the opposite extreme, you have those who believe in the supreme worth of the individual in making decisions that affect his or her life. (The libertarians) You are in the middle, a moderate on social issues, on the Libertarian/Authoritarian scale, but your economic views on the Socialist/Capitalist scale make you a solid social democrat like those seen in Europe.

The nearest person to me is Gandhi, but I'm somewhat more Libertarian than he is.

I think I used to be more in the middle on the left/right economic axis, but am getting more left, I guess. That's probably due to my time here on DU - you all are influencing me. :-)

On Edit: I'm just about right on top of the Dalai Lama. I guess that's good company to be in. And I'm just about as far away from Bush as it's possible to be on this scale.

70. Hanging with the Dalai Lama.
Very interesting lessons to be learned from that website.

Fascism is a social entity.

72. O scary I've drifted rightward!
My scores: Your political compass
Economic Left/Right: -7.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -8.15

The last time I took it I was -9.xx, -9.xx

I must've succumbed to Bush's stellar handling of Katrina.

Ah, at least I'm still in the company of Noam Chomsky, Nelson Mandela, and Mohandes Ghandi. Not a bad bunch!

But I'm very glad to see that Gee Dubya and I are nearly polat opposites!

This is a good exercise.

If there were a party to reflect this school of political thought, what would it be called? I'm going to start a thread to ask this.

86. To repeat from another thread....
These little compasses are recruitment tools for the Libertarian Party. When I first started seeing those about 15 years ago or so, it was the Libertarian Party pushing them. The presence of the Ayn Randian buzzword "collectivism" on the charts should also be a big red flag alerting us to the fact that the makers of the compass are up to no good. You answer some questions they wrote, and by giving reasonable responses you magically meet their definition of a libertarian.

The word Libertarian has been stretched so much that it is virtually meaningless. When somebody declares "I am a libertarian", typically all they mean is "I am against excessive government intervention." This is a pretty empty statement though. Nobody is for excessive government intervention. Rather we all just have different ideas on what constitutes excessive intervention.

88. This one isn't pushing Ayn Rand at all
In fact, for each of the quadrants, they've provided a reading list of authors in that vein.

Here's the list for the Left-Libertarians:
* Peter Scowen
* Benjamin Barber
* Howard Zinn
* Thomas Frank
* George Monbiot
* Emma Goldman
* Al Franken
* Ivan Illich
* Nils Christie
* Pierre Bourdieu
* Joseph Stiglitz
* Naomi Tutu
* William Blum
* Michael Moore
* George Orwell
* Naomi Klein
* Eric Schlosser
* Thomas Paine
* Noam Chomsky
* Ralph Nader
* Greg Palast
* Peter Kropotkin
* Tariq Ali
* J. K. Galbraith

Ayn Rand, P.J. O'Rourke, and Milton Friedman are among those on the reading list for the Libertarian Right.
